Not in my name

not-in-my-name

I haven’t got the first clue as to what Sir Winston Churchill was like.   I was a young boy when he died but what I do know he was held in the highest regard by all my aunts,  uncles and grandparents.   As I have lived my life I have from time to time read things about what Churchill did during his career and there is little doubt that he wasn’t a simple character but rather someone who once he had entered the room would have been the centre of attention.  He served  in most of the great offices of state during his political life and one thing I think is clear he would not have even contemplated allowing some unelected political enemy to act as the de facto British   representative and conduit to the President of the United States of America.   I suspect he would have seen this little stunt exactly for what it was, a usurpation of Her Majesty’s Government by someone who has no power and is only the temporary leader a junior political party.

I suspect that the Trump side of things didn’t realise what they were getting themselves into when they gave Nigel Farage a meeting before the British Prime Minister.  I suspect that they saw this as just a way of saying thank you for the help given.   If, however, they really do think that Nigel Farage does in some way represent the British Government then we all have a far greater problem than anyone could have imagined.   In diplomacy the little things matter, especially when dealing with one of your countries most important allies and this is a lesson that Donald Trump is going to have to learn.   He might want to make America Great Again but America is part of the wider world and in the wider world things are never as straightforward as they seem from high above 5th Avenue.

Walking the Dog

There is something about a park on Sunday morning, especially on a lovely late autumn day, that is quite magical.   The life of the city is out promenading catching a few rays whilst they can before the winter coats and thick scarves are the order of the day.  Even the dogs seem to have an extra spring in their steps as they snuffle and chase around, all the time ensuring they are within visual contact of their owner.  Parklife indeed.

Hubris

The city of Leicester has the graves of two men who fell foul of ambition and hubris and between them did more to usher in the modern world in which we live – although neither would have known this as they prepared to meet their maker.   The first grave is by far the most famous – Richard the 3rd whose death marked the start of the Tudor period of English history which in turn marked the start of the English and then British ascendency which saw its peak just before the start of the first world war of the twentieth century.

The second grave is of Cardinal Wolsey which is far less famous and hardly ever visited but is situated in the ruins of Leicester abbey which was dismantled with 10 years of his as a direct result of his failure.  Neither men had any real connection with the city of Leicester other than having the misfortune of dying in the area but there they now rest, Richard recently reburied with great fanfare and now a tourist attraction whilst Wolsey’s grave is ignored.

The reason why their burials are so relevant to the situation today is because of the hubris of Kings.  Richard thought he could defeat an upstart with no real support in the country and a much much smaller army – he failed.   Wolsey tried and failed to please the self centred wish of a King who was more than happy to destroy a 1000 years of culture to satisfy his own pleasure.  The ruins of Leicester Abbey, once one of the richest Augustinian establishments in England, bare testament to the hubris of Henry 8th.

So as we try to come to terms with the forthcoming reign of President Trump perhaps we should think about these two grave and the lessons that they teach as to what happens when a King lets his pride take over.

Perfect Illusion

president-elect

I have been watching the excellent series The Crown on Netflix which, for those of you how might be aware, documents the first few years of the reign of Queen Elizabeth 2nd.   Perhaps it should have been called the Educating Elizabeth but perhaps that might be just a little flippant.   The penultimate episode of the first season/series deals with the official portrait of Sir Winston Churchill.  This is perhaps one of the most famous paintings of mid 20th century British art not because it was a great painting but rather that Churchill hated it and his wife had it destroyed on his death.

This caused me to think about what the official portrait of the next President of the United States of America will look like?   Which ever painter is selected to capture the likeness will have his/her work cut out because Trump doesn’t have a face that will sit comfortably on the canvas. I am sure that someone will be found to make the painting, may I suggest Jonathan Yeo who seems to be able to make the rich and powerful seem slightly more approachable.  However, I guess that Trump wouldn’t want such a thing but like so much about what President Trump will be like we just don’t know.   After all in the last week he has changed from being the foaming mouthed bigot into a respectful, perhaps even slightly crestfallen figure.  Is it me but has the enormity of what  he has taken on suddenly started to sink in.   It is one thing to boast and bluster from the side line it is quite another to actually have to deliver on your boasts.

Old Man Look at My Eyes

old-man-look-at-my-eyes

24 hours on I think the person who appears to be most surprised by his victory is probably Donald Trump.  I suspect I am reading far too much into his acceptance speech but I got the impression that enormity of what has just happened and what is about to hit him might have turned President Elect Trump into somebody who is somewhat different from Republican nominee Trump.   This is not meant as anything other than an observation and quite honestly it shouldn’t come as a revelation.  So goodbye Mailia and Sasha hello Baron.

Time will tell what President Trump will turn out like.  I think one thing is sure…there are going to be an awful lot of people who are going to be disappointed in 4 years time – that is the nature of any Presidency – Ivanka Trump for 2020 anyone?

Now that all that nonsense is over with back to the real world and the result of a final pass through the images I captured the other day in Victoria Park.

Unknown Unknowns….

So there we have it – Donald J. Trump has been elected President of the United States of America.   I thought that there was a 60% chance that Mrs Clinton would have made it over the line whereas Trump was 40%.   However, I had little enthusiasm for Mrs Clinton it was just that she seemed much better than the alternative.  However, the alternative has won and so we need to accept that and wish him well in his endeavours as he is about to get a huge reality check about the difference between rhetoric and governing.   I haven’t got the first idea as to what President he will make which is true of all first time Presidents.   The difference with President elect Trump is that he has no real record at all other than his various business endeavours which have been patchy to say the least.

As for the wider message of this  election what does that tells us about the world at the moment?    It is far far too early to even contemplate answering this other than to say that people who might be described as forming the elite, be they politicians, media commentators or the influential have had their noses put out of joint much the same way that this was the case after Brexit.   How this change will be felt in the long run is anyone’s guess but if a Trump Presidency  has anything like the transformative effect that Brexit has in this country then who knows what the world will look like in four years time.

One final thought.   Yesterday I suggested that things were far from rosy in European Union, the Commision is possibly the most remote of elites there is in the west.   So how they react to a Trump Presidency is going to affect how the Brexit negotiations are undertaken.   Perhaps, just perhaps, they might feel sufficiently crestfallen to actually enter into meaningful negotiations to the mutual benefit of both the EU and Britain with trying to ‘punishing’ Britain for the temerity of pushing back against the EU.   If this is the case then from a European perspective  President Trump might have been positive outcome.   I suspect this is a far too simplistic approach to the whole maelstrom that Mr Trump has released.

So congratulation to Donald Trump he fought the election and won.  We all now have to hope that the Donald Trump on the election trail is not the Donald Trump who has the nuclear launch codes at his finger tips after January 2017.   Only time will tell.

Some more thoughts on the Brexit nonsense

I really cannot state enough just how thin skinned some of the Brexiteers are.   They won the referendum and Britain is going to leave the EU yet this doesn’t seem to be good enough for them.   Instead they seem to think that this must mean that everything written, discussed or thought about must comply with their rather narrow view of what the world should look like.   This is simply wrong and they should try and mature a little.

Now that being said what I am about to write may sound in total contrast to what I have written above so here goes.   I think that Britain will leave the EU under the so called Hard Brexit conditions.  The reason why I say that is that I believe the single biggest issue in the referendum was immigration.   It doesn’t matter one jot that this position is economically nonsensical I believe it to be the prevailing view of the majority of the country and as no one in power seems to want to try and change this view then this is going to be the main red line in the negotiations for Britain.   This of course is a red line for the EU as well and so will limit any chance of negotiations around this point.   This doesn’t mean that there won’t be any agreements made during the talks it just means that sometime in 2019 Britain and EU will have a very different trading and immigration relationship.

There will be huge costs on both sides if accommodations are not found to make this as amicable as possible.   It will also take years for all the ramifications of this separation to be worked through and I suspect both sides will pay a heavy cost as far as future prosperity is concerned.  Nonetheless I cannot see any other way forward and the sooner everyone in Britain comes to accept this and try and make the most of it the better.  I suspect most companies have already started to do this which will mean money that should have been spent on investment will have to be diverted but who said Freedom was cheap.

Probably the biggest loser’s in all this will be the millions of EU citizens who already live in Britain as they will have to register and be treated as immigrants rather than Europeans.   How this is managed is unclear but given the Home Offices track record I wouldn’t hold out too much hope that it will be seen as a job well done.

The next biggest loser will be the Republic of Ireland who may well start to realise just how dependent they are on the British market for their goods and services and a very chill wind may well blow their way after the type of exit I suspect is going to happen.   I dare not even speculate as to how this will affect the peace process in Northern Ireland other than to say that it won’t help things.

With Ireland in mind I suspect the SNP’s dream of an independent Scotland may well evaporate as the Irish provide a painful lesson of what happens when your largest export market decides what is best (debatable point) for it and shows little regard for your problems.   This is not even taking account of the fiscal problems that Scotland could face outside of the UK.  In short I suspect that the SNP may have passed their peak support and more normal politics, that is a nation with a number of political parties rather than one dominant, will return to Scotland.   This being said I suspect that by the end of all this Scotland will probably have true Home Rule with only very limited interference from London, the so called Devo Max option on steroids.

As for the EU I suspect they are going to go through changes the likes of which few will have experienced before.   This isn’t to over blow the role Britain played in the EU but it was the second largest economy and country by population (Both arguable I accept) and a large net contributor to the EU budget.  I suspect after Britain has left the EU Commision will try and pretend nothing has changed only to find this is far from the truth.   In future I suspect that the EU will fragment into blocs far more than is the case so far.  They might even see further countries leave, I suspect that Sweden might be the next which would further isolate the Germans.  The French will try to provide leadership only to discover that they are in a reduced position when facing the other 26 nations and qualified majority voting.   The old eastern bloc may well start to act in a very similar way as they do in the Eurovision song contest (stupid example I know but rather telling) as they fight to maintain the large EU handouts they currently receive which, of course, were being paid for to a greater or lesser extent by the British budget contribution.   And this is before we even start to bring up the unresolved problems associated with the Euro and the mediterranean countries which again will loop back onto German.  Then there are the banks….I could go on.

In short without clear and enlightened leadership from the European Commision the shock of Britain leaving the EU could well be the catalyst for one all mighty clusterfuck.   This will be to no one’s advantage which brings us full circle to what happens during the next two years of negotiations and whether they are enlightened or stupid point scoring.   Of course the whole process may well take a different route with the kind assistance of  the President of the United States of America, the gifted, reasonable and diplomatic Donald J. Trump!

Listening to John Williams

autumn-trees-and-leaves walker-and-cyclist war-memorial

Yesterday I had an outbreak of ‘Fresher’s Flu’ which of course is nonsense for a number of reasons which those who know me well will be able to quickly identify.   So in an effort to clear away the damaging virus/bug I went a walk around Victoria Park in Leicester and a more beautiful day you could not have wished for.   As you can see I brought my new baby with me and at the moment it hasn’t disappointed.  I especially like the 16/70mm Zeiss designed lens which seemed to absorb the brilliant autumn colours and then gave them an extra punch.  Nonsense again  but only partly as anyone who has used good quality lens will testify – you tend to get what you pay for.

So time for a couple more paracetamol and then lunch, what an appetiser !?!
