Project LV One – Day 39 – Books and Ideas

Arthur Scargill

Most of today has been spent putting together the first of the 12 books I hope to make for Project LV One.  These things time, experience has taught me that if I were to rush this then I would be disappointed.  However, whilst I have been doing this another idea has been rolling around the vast caverns of my mind and in a way it is all thanks to this man – Arthur Scargill.

30 years ago this year he lead one of the proudest and by many standards moderate unions on one of the most disasterous political/industrial  actions of modern British history.   The whys and wherefores can be argued elsewhere but at the end of the 1985/5 miners strike the coal industry was left on its knees and the thing that Scargill predicted would happen happened – most of the deep mine capacity in Britain was closed.   However, if it had only been an industrial dispute then that would have been bad enough but mining for many villages it was their death.   Many thousands of people were effected by the outcome of the dispute and many still carry the scares both physical and emotional.

So 30 years later is the idea of the project – hardly original I know and at the moment that is all I have to go on.  Well that isn’t true but at the moment the other details I think need to be worked on just a little more.   Just one though does occurs to me as I write this.  30 years ago I had not idea that I was able to produce a reasonable likeness of someone by using just a pencil.

Whatever happened to the Heroes…No More Heroes

Project LV One – Day 38 – Compton Verney

20140530-Photo 30-05-2014 13 27 39 - Compton Verney Park

Beyond the art collections and exhibitions there is a wonderful parkland that you can explore.  As with much of what is supposed to be natural in England this is totally false and man made.  This time the park was laid out by Capability Brown.  So much for the rural idil

Project LV One – Day 36 – Rodin and Death

Rodin

Last week I visited Compton Verney and saw their excellent Moore and Rodin exhibition.  In the grounds of the house the copy of the Burghers of Calais that is usually found outside Parliament is to be found.  This celebrates(?) the siege of Calais by the English in the 15th century when an awful lot of the occupants of Calais died.   Death was also in the air this morning as a young family of Blue Tits fledged from a nest box in the garden.  For reason best known to themselves Blue Tit seem to fledge when the weather is quite miserable.

In one sense this is a good introduction to the hardships of their short lives because few of the fledglings will last much beyond the day as they are predated by other animals needing to feed their young.  Even if they make it to adulthood they probably won’t last for more than a couple of years in which their lives would be hard and mostly spent either feeding themselves or the broads they bring into this world.

At times life can be really shitty.

Project LV One – Day 34 – Compare and Contrast

20140527-IMG_1979

Just 7 days ago the weather was wonderful…now we are back to good old blighty – cold and grey.  Oh well could be worse…much much worse and if you can’t take a joke you really should live in Britain.

Hallelujah

Project LV One – Day 33 – Pleasantville

Pleasantville

Sometimes the strangest things happen that make you stop and think about predeterminism.   However, the universe is infinite so somewhere sometime these random things are bound to happen in such a way as to lead one to believe there is a plan – I really hope there isn’t as otherwise what is the point of all this as the the whole things is pretty awful?.  Today we in Britain and the rest of Europe, yes we are part of Europe whether we like it or not, are waking up to our own tea party moment.  Mostly right wing and very right wing parties have won significant votes in the European election.

Probably the one thing that links all these things is a wish to return to a time or certainties, a time when you knew what was right, what was true and what it meant to be a member of a country (Enter European Country here – it doesn’t seem to make any difference).  Now, of course, things are different and many of the certainties of the past no longer exist and a lot of people are worried by this.   There would appear to be coorelation between levels of education and a propensity  to vote for these parties of the past (My interpretation but it seems to fit) – the higher level of education you have the less likely are you to have voted for one of these parties.

This is were Pleasantville comes in.  Here a fictional town has to deal with change and many don’t like it.  However, they get used to it and then move on – sorry if that is a bit of a spoiler.  So as I was watching the film this evening this all came into focus.  Not sure if this revaluation will change anything but it certainly inspired me to make this drawing

Fun Fun Fun

20080610_5D_MG_1886 - People on beach - Newgale

The other day as the rain slowly feel against my car’s window Fun Fun Fun by the Beach Boys came onto the radio and I was struck by the strange junta position – a rainy May in England in the 21st century against the sunny happy feel of southern California in the 1960’s – a very strange momment.

This got me thinking about the images I captured sometime ago – 2008 – on the beach at Newgale, Pembrokeshire.  I finally got around to remaining the images and decided to make this image this morning – another grey and overcast day.

Fun Fun Fun til….
