Walk around the city No 2

How exactly do you post panorama photographs on to a blog? The native setting for any image on the internet should be around 800 px wide, perhaps given the larger screens available this might be slightly higher but then again with the interent being consumed for and more via tablets etc perhaps even less. The the native size of each of these images is a round 5800 px wide – it just doesn’t work that well unless you have some form of software that reads the images and lets you spin around.

So what to so? Well the best solution I’ve come up at the moment is to splice them into three. Not very elegant but it is a solution of sorts.

The app I used was DMD panorama on my iPhone – now I have no idea whether this is good or bad it does seem to work reasonably well, not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, however, as I have no real experience using these types of apps it is a bit difficult to judge.

Walk around the city – Part 1

It has been a really enjoyable day today. Saw a great movie, Trance, and mooched around making some images – for me that is just about perfect. The reason why this album is part one is because I have new app that creates 360 panoramas and I’m going to try and post these as well, although I’m not sure exactly how will they will appear. Trance

Here is the full plot of Trance….they steal a Goya painting. Hope that won’t spoil the film for you but that is all the film is about!

Of course this is true at one level but in reality, if that is the right thing to say when talking about Trance, it is much more than that.

It really is a small budget movie made with high production values and well worth going to see it…you won’t be disappointed but at the end you might just want to touch the Trance icon.

To think Danny Boyle’s day job when he made this was the London Olympic opening…wonder he could do if he devoted his full attention to something?

Killing time

A whole day to kill … the car is having some work done on it so I’ve got time to kill. Just spent half an hour or so sketching all saints church, Leicester … something I really don’t do unless I have time on my hands… which I do.

My how things have changed

I had such an interesting thought…what photos did I make this time last year. It came as a bit of a shock when I found out I hadn’t made any. So what about the year before? Nothing. I had to go back to 2010 before I made any photos in April. If you had told this me back in 2010 I wouldn’t have believed you – but that is how life works out and really we have no idea what will happen in the future beyond broad themes.

The first part of the Decision Made

Well one down one to go. I’ve decided to sell my Sony NEX5n. But before you think that I think the camera isn’t any good this would be far of the mark. The Sony NEX5n is one of the best cameras that I have owned. It is just that it doesn’t fit into the way that I make photographs anymore. For me I need a camera that is pocketable – such as the iPhone is. Now I had thought of abandoning ‘proper’ photography all together for the iPhone but have come to realise that would be a mistake. I have been at this photography game for almost 40 years now and would be lost if I didn’t have a proper camera at hand. For all the power of the iPhone and the apps it isn’t a very good camera in fact it is bloody awful. However in a cloud world it makes sense to use a camera that can easily feed into this but it really does have significant limitations when you go beyond its comfort zone.

So if one decision has been made what is the second one? Well I have to decide between the Canon G15 or the G1x. Both fit my needs going forward the question is whether I want the better image quality of the G1x over a larger ISO range than the G15. I’m not sure yet but hopefully over the next few days I’ll come up some answers.

Watch this space.

BTW the image is one of the 615, yes 615 images I have captured with the Sony NEX5n. My god 615 is that all I’ve taken with this camera? Well probably closer to 1000 as I’ve deleted a quite a few due to the usual editing process. But 1000 is still nothing over 18 months!
