Dodgy Dossier

Hip problem – week 2…well things are starting to finally get a lot better…there have been a number of false dawns along the way but I think this could be really it. I do hope so. Another reason for this is because the Tour de France ends this weekend and I will be at a loss without it.

However, yesterday saw the first really silly season story to hit the papers. It would seem that one year on the Olympics in London actually didn’t cost a thing. According to a Government study the amount of business generated by the Olympics was the almost the same as the costs of the whole thing and – wait for it – there are more benefits yet to come. We had a whole raft of talking heads from the PM down trying to convince us that, one year on, we should rejoice one more time about the no cost Olympics. However, when the report is examined in greater details we find that there are very little hard facts just an awful lot of assumptions.

Now I willing to accept that that there were some financial benefits both real and opportunity but must we have paraded in front of us a report that is more reminiscent of Blair ‘dodgy dossier’ that got us all into the Iraq mess. Now just think if we hadn’t gone along with Brother George into Iraq how much money we would have saved, not to mention lives, for nothing of any lasting benefit. In fact measured against the Iraq mess the Olympics were a roaring financial success which made the country feel good about itself. I don’t thing that is something that could ever be said about Iraq.

The Crazy Tour de France

If you have never seen the TV coverage of the Alpe d’ Huez stage on the Tour de France then it can be totally crazy. The riders seem to disappear into a sea of people who seem more interested in getting their 15 seconds of frame or infamy on TV rather than giving the riders the space to race. The only good things about this madness is that it is the same for each rider. This year the organisers decided that they wanted double the amount of the insanity so sent the riders up the Alpe twice. It was bonkers yet totally compelling TV so I guess the organisers know what they are doing.

As for the GC Froome increased his lead even though he lost 20 seconds due to a feeding infraction. I guess this proves just how dominant he is this year. The real race is now for second place which should be fascinating. Another great Tour I think.

Tour de France…a great place to learn about geology

I’m not sure whether I should be doing this but as the riders climb Alpe d Huez I keep looking at the geological formations!

Dodgy Hip, allergy and Chris Froome

Tomorrow will be seven days since I did my hip – on my exercise bike of all things.   Over the past seven days the pain has come and gone but Monday I spent most of the day producing copper bottom proof that I have an allergy to codeine!  That is a day I do not want to repeat in a while.

So the hip is getting slightly better each day.  The prognoses is that it is nothing too serious just got to get the inflammation down and things should back to normal.  The only good thing to have come out of this is that I have been able to sit back and enjoy the Tour de France.  This has been tinged by  my frustration with the commentary teams of both ITV and Eurosport.  They both seem incapable of accepting that Chris Froome is head and shoulders above any other rider on the tour this year.  Now I understand the reasons for this – if the race is sewn up then less people are going to watch but really come on lets have acknowledgement of what is happening.

The ITV pair are perhaps the worst “…A real solid performance from Froome…” their closing comment on Froome.  A real solid performance would be if he had limited his losses to a few seconds. Instead, Froome took several seconds off the number two rider, and drugs cheat, Alberto Contador.  This was an outstanding performance and it really should be acknowledged as such.

I can understand the frustration of Froome over all the drugs allegations but I also suspect that there is also something much more basic going on.  Sky have the money and support to blow every other team out of the water and this will only get worse the more successful they are.  You only have to look at the sponsorship package to realise that this team has serious money and serious money means that you can seriously prepare for the Tour de France.  Something I suspect other teams just can’t match and so their may just be  jealousy of their success coupled with the fact because they don’t have any history of drug taking – like many of the other teams – they can take the moral high ground which isn’t going win friends and influence people.

The media have now gone over board with their pursuit of Froome and drugs taking.  Again, this is understandable but as David Walsh  (the link explains everything) it would have been nice if they had been as keen to investigate Lance Armstrong.  He has followed Sky from the inside and he doesn’t believe that there is any drugs cheating going on.  Of course he is a News Corp employee but I doubt he would say these things if he thought there was something wrong.

For me, I think Sky are clean – they really would loose everything very quickly if they weren’t – given the last couple of years that News Corp (or is that 21st Century Fox?) have had with scandals I’m pretty sure they have made sure if any drugs cheating were proven they would pull the plug big style and without News Corp Sky are nothing.

So perhaps the commentators should accept that Froome has taken everything anyone has been able to throw at him.  He is the King of the Mountains, he leads that competition as well, and it doesn’t matter how much you try and pretend that Contador has a chance in a head to head climbing up Alpe d’Huez there is no evidence to support this.  Of course things can go wrong but providing they don’t we should try and enjoy a phenomenal feat of human endurance.

Now if only was able to get back on my exercise bike I’d be there riding along – in my dreams!

Dodgy Hip and unwanted House Guests

So much for the best laid plans! Today I was supposed to be visiting the Houghton Hall exhibition and sunning myself in the process. Unfortunately, my body had other ideas so I had to abandon that and rest my dodgy hip – yippee.

I woke up at 5am this morning my hip throbbing and it took some time to calm this down. However, one of the bonus from walking so early is that we were able to prevent our house guests from coming into the bed room. The previous evening we had discovered the male of the pair in the bathroom which only goes to prove how domesticated they are. Anyway he was shoed away but it does mean you have to be on the look out for the pair coming into the house. Talk about unwanted House Guests!

What it has meant is that I can sit back and watch the Tour de France without feeling guilt about sitting inside whilst it is so nice outside. I have to say that Chris Froome is just unbelievable – you can understand why there are so many questions relating to dopping but I believe that Sky are clean and the whole team would collapse if there was any suggestion of cheating – including the return of Dave Brailsford and Bradley Wiggins’ knighthoods – so the costs of cheating are much greater than the rewards. Maybe that is the way forward.

As for the performance difference I think it must be remembered that the Sky team are different to all other teams, with the possible exception of the Australian Orica Greenedge team. Not only are they the richest team in Pro Cycling but they an off shot of the GB national team so have the advantage of some of the best sports scientist in the world to help them at little cost. Also they have a team of young and up and coming riders to test the science before feeding it into the pro team. In many respects it is more a kin to a top F1 team set up, such as Mercedes, which has a massive multi national company as well as engine factory as back up. None of this takes anything away from Froom – it just shows what can be achieved when you put a world class athlete into a world class set up.

So what has all this to do with my dodgy hip? Well I injured my hip on my exercise bike. I just hope that Froom doesn’t suffer the same problem – but then he is in his twenties and supper fit – two things that you wouldn’t say about me!

An audience with the Pope

Tomorrow I have an audience with the Pope and I’m really looking forward to it. We’ve got our tickets and will be there in plenty of time. The weather is promising to be warm but as we’ll not be too far from the coast it should be a lot more tolerable.

In preparation for the visit I thought I would try and make a painting of his eminence and this is it. Unfortunately all I think I’ve achieved in doing is proving just good Velazquez is – as if that should come as a big surprise. I just hope the audience will sort out my dicky hip…I doubt that will be case but we’ll live in hope.
