Woody Allen and putting another book together

Another day another publication. After abandoning my plans to publish the result of my historic research for this year at least so I have moved onto putting my year book together. This will be the 5th of these I’ve made and it is a wonderful exercise in taking stock what I made over the year, in this case 2012. However, as it the latest in a series it is also even more powerful because I am able to compare the work from the previous years with last year. If you get the chance it really is worth the effort.

Anyway that was this morning and I’ve decided to give it a brake and let my selection marinate in my head and go back to it tomorrow. Always a sound practice I’ve found. So for the past hour or so I thought I would just relax and enjoy myself with a sketch of Woody Allen and I have to say I’m quite pleased with this.

As the song said “I am what I am”. Pip Pip.

When suddenly you realise there is so much more to find out…

As some of you may know I have been undertaking a long term research project for longer than I would like to recall. Anyway I made the decision this year that I was going to right up my findings and publish them in a paper. This sounded so straight forward – I know a huge amount about the subject of my research and what could be easier. Well hubris I say Hubris.

The process of pulling the paper together as made me realise that, whilst I do know an awful lot about my subject, there are gapping holes in my evidence that need to be addressed before I can publish something to my satisfaction. I suspect I’m being too anal about all this and I should go ahead an publish but I just can’t. I have to have answers to questions that have appeared whilst put the paper together. So it looks like more hours spent looking at old maps in records offices. I think I’ll leave this until the autumn!

Happy Flowers

Not sure the exact name of these flowers, could find out but can’t be arsed…anyway I’ve always loved them as I think they are happy flowers and it is a pleasure just look at them when I have a quick walk around the garden the first thing of a morning. I guess it does harm things when it is another warm sunny morning – although that is going to change with rain forecast! Um nice.

Amitriptyline…what a wonderful drug

Over the past couple of weeks I’ve been suffering from an injury to my hip. One of the pain killers I was taking was amitriptytline which took a couple of days to kick in as a pain killer. However, the immediate effect was to make me sedated and really a bit trippy – not sure if that is a medical term but that is how I felt. Fortunately I didn’t need the pain killing effects of this drugs so was able to quickly come off of it but for the couple or so days I was on it was some of the strangest I have had in a long time!

Whilst I was disabled with my hip I was watched one of my favourite films again – Watchman. It is full of holes and faults but I think the one it did capture was the comic book look and feel – something that Zack Snyder seems to have mastered really well. One of the character’s I’ve been trying to capture is silk spectre – in particularly the 1940’s sense of sexiness – to date I don’t think I’ve quite got it but it is getting better than my earlier attempts.

I have also come up with a new measure of capacity of Iron Age salt containers – the Saxo 360g test – how many of these salt containers can fit into a Briquetage. It is going to change the whole understanding of the Iron Age salt trade I’m sure so remember you heard it here first.

Well Done Chris Froome – the King of Marginal Gains

I have no idea how you do these sort of things. I know you are some sort of physiological oddity but that would only take you so far. The rest is down to shear guts and determination and dare I say it bloody hard work. It has been a privilege to sit on my backside and watch you battle with and then tame the Tour de France.
