Project LV One – Day 346 – Hercules fighting a centaur

Hercules and Centaur

I’m really not sure why I made this quick sketch other than the ancient greeks are flavour of the month at the moment with the BBC.  This is because the British Museum has a major exhibition about how the ancient Greeks saw beauty and how this has completely infected western art.  It would be nice to think that were true but I just have a sneaking feeling it might also be because I watch a totally outrageous film the other day with the Rock as Hercules.  High art?   I think not but it was packed full with British thesps over acting in what looked like great fun.  Total nonsense I know but why should movies be always about deep philosophical matters rather than grown men shouting and fighting each other in more and more outlandish ways?

Project LV One – Day 345 – Now is the winter of discontent made glorious by this particular son of York…

Bad Richard 3rd

I know we are now supposed to view Richard 3rd as some sort of hero – I just can’t.   My antipathy has nothing to do with the King himself who, by medieval standards, was no worse than most.  He certainly wasn’t saintly but he did what he had to do, and if that meant having his nephews murdered then so be it.

Richard 3rd and Leicester Cathedral

The reason for my antipathy is the turning of the recent discoverly of his bone into some form of disneyfied tourist attraction.  If you think that this is too strong take a look at the Leicester guild hall’s promo video.

Leicester Castle

The area around the Greyfriars and St Martin’s look wonderful but the real surviving  parts of medieval Leicester, Leicester Castle and the church of St Mary de Castro are looking sorry and neglected which is strange because these are the only parts of modern Leicester that Richard 3rd might have had some recollection of.  Leicester Castle was the heart of the Duke of Lancaster’s lands and saw a number of them die their including perhaps the most famous Duke John of Gaunt.  John’s children did more than any other members of the royal family to  inflame the feuds that became known as the Wars of the Roses.  This of course lead to Henry Tudor, a member the illegitimate Beaufort branch, a product of John’s messing around with the nanny, slaying Richard 3rd at Bosworth field.   Which might explain why the current monarch didn’t send any senior representative as it would highlight their illegitimate claim to the throne – but that is a different story.

Now I understand why the city council are making a big thing of the Richard 3rd reburial et al but it does seem strange that the medieval heart of Leicester is so neglected and ignored.  Even the Leicester Cathedral might look medieval but it isn’t really anything of the sort .  yes there was a church on this site since at least Domesday but the current building was extensively rebuilt by the Victorians and in truth is little more than an ordinary parish church.

I just wish that some of the money spent creating a fantasy had been spent on restoring and reviving the real medieval Leicester instead of letting it slowly decay and collapse.  Perhaps the best symbol of this neglect is the spire of St Mary’s which was pulled down not long before all the pageantry of the reburial of Richard 3rd.  It is all so very sad.

Project LV One – Day 344 – Cream Tea

Variations on a Theme

Every now and then life goes something that reminds me that life really is worth living.  Over the weekend my son got married to a wonderful woman and that is life affirming, well at least I feel that way, and today the sun was out and my wife and I had marvelous walk through the English countryside of south east Leicestershire.

Now I know that there are many fine and appealing places in the world which no doubt can rival and possibly beat where we were today but I don’t care.  This is my little corner of the world and I feel a real attachment to it and on a day like today it was almost a spiritual thing.

Cream tea

After all this life affirming nonsense it is always nice to come back to earth and what better way than taking afternoon tea in a pleasant little tea room in Rutland…I guess my diet starts tomorrow…again!

Project LV One – Day 343 – Wearing Thin

Girl With Arms Up

When I started this year long journey I had no idea where it would take me.  As I come to the closing laps of the endurance I am no clearer as to the end point of the journey other than to say in less than 3 weeks time it will all be over.  Boy will I be glad.

At the start I was full of enthusiasm and dread but now I am bored and little resentful of the fact that I need to make something just to keep up with the relentless slog.  Of course when I look through some of the images I have created I am quite pleased others less so.  In truth I just want it to be over so that I can move on to…well what?   I have no idea yet but some ideas are mulling around my head but we will have to see how time treats them.

Project LV One – Day 341 – Slag

Ghastly Teeth

So I hope you’ve had a great Easter Sunday whatever you beliefs.  For me I’ve been searching for slag (BTW don’t try google slag unless you are prepared to be depressed – for some reason there is a whole section called British Slag, I’ll leave that to your own imagination!)  However, my search has been far more elusive – looking for the byproduct of medieval iron making in south east Leicestershire.  It is a hard and pointless slog at times and I can only so much I can take before I my head explodes. Fortunately  I have had some interesting results and I have certainly expanded my knowledge but in the end I just had to make a quick drawing to release the steam.

We are the youth of today.

Project LV One – Day 340 – SNLP

Nicola Sturgeon

So the verdicts are in from the debate on Thursday evening and everyone is agreed that Nicola Sturgeon was the winner.  Suddenly the metropolitan papers have once again remembered that there is more than one country that makes up the union which is at the heart of Britain.  The last time this happened was when there was panic over the way that the recent Scottish referendum might have lead to Scottish Independence.  However, the voters didn’t choose this and this led our great opinion formers to think that had put the question to bed for a generation – which I guess shows just how little they really know.

The interesting spin being put on this is that Ms Sturgeon is the real Labour leader and that a vote for the SNP is a vote for real Labour. This in turn plays into the hands of the Conservatives who have little to gain electorally from Scotland themselves other than the destruction of the Labour heartland and thus any chance that Labour might have of winning outright.  So in that sense they have a considerable amount to gain from talking up Ms Sturgeon.

I laughingly wrote the other month of Alex Salmond as the next Prime Minister but perhaps I should’ve replaced him with Nicola Sturgeon?  The reality is that what we are starting to see is the destruction of the old political order, which I have to admit I thought was going to start on the right but maybe it be on the left.  This in turn could lead to the destruction or perhaps a better word is the reconstruction of the way that this country is run with a move to a federal system.  In this model the nations would have much greater autonomy than is currently the case and the centre will only deal with UK wide issues such as defence, foreign affairs, the EU and finance.  Everything else will be for each individual country to decide for themselves how to spend or not spend the money.   One of the cornerstones of this new model will be the Scottish National Party (SNP) who, whilst wishing for independence, realise that this is not really a starter as they will always have the goliath of England to the south who will directly or indirectly affect how  Scotland works.  Also the figures didn’t add up six months ago when they last tried for independence and things have got a lot once for Scotland since then and in truth the voters of Scotland know this.   What the SNP really want is devo max which, if they play their cards right, they are likely to get over the next 5 years.

There are a huge amounts of things that could go wrong with this vision, one of the biggest being Alex Salmond who demonstrated such bad judgement over the past few weeks I wouldn’t be surprised if  Ms Sturgeon isn’t praying for a Lib Dem victory in the Gordon constituency.  Another unknown is the reaction of the Labour party to any significant gains by the SNP.  Do they see this as an opportunity to change the map of the UK for good or do they draw inwards and consume themselves in the sort of bloodbath last seen in the 1980’s? Only time will tell.

So where does this model leave the Conservatives and the Lib Dems?  If we do get a minority Labour government supported by the the SNP then it is reasonable to assume that the Lib Dems would support this as well.  One of the things that Labour would have to offer is genuine  changes to the way that parliament is elected.  Again, the SNP would not be in any position to oppose this as this is how the Scottish Parliament is elected.  It would also offer the beleaguered Scottish Labour Party hope of gaining some seats back at Westminster.  If this were to happen then it would quicken up the pace for a move to federal Britain.

As for the Conservatives I really don’t think they would be able to put up much of a fight against this for two reasons.  Firstly I suspect that there will be some form of seismic split on the right  if there is no likelihood of any vote on Europe.  This could lead to the formation of two right wing blocs in parliament.  Secondly, a federal Britain offers the chance for the Conservative party to have real power in England, where they may well end up being the largest party, that is if they too don’t descend into  a Labour style 1980’s battle.  This is not guaranteed.

So there we have it a perfect high definition picture from just two hours of TV – not bad really.  Is it likely?  Well in politics never say never but in truth I don’t think so as I have not mentioned the two things that politics has in abundance – ego and self interest.  Given the probable inconclusive nature of the next election these two things will be most apparent and if that is the case then all bets are off

Project LV One – Day 339 – Is this the scariest man in British politics?

Ed Miiband

So we have had the leaders debate, for what it was worth, and now we will continue with the non stop nonsense for the next four weeks.  Yesterday one of the funniest stories made the lead in The Times.   Apparently the currency markets have just woken up to the fact that Britain is about to have an election and no one is sure what will happen then.   This lead to ‘panic’ in the markets as, well, who will pay the bills?  I think that was what they were saying as if the British economy will collapse on the 8th May without a strong government in place.  The implication of this not too subtle scaremongering was that  should anyone other than the Conservatives be elected to run the country we might as well pack our bags.

This was utter nonsense but will be no doubt be typical of what we will get on the run up to the election and a Labour led government starts to become more of a possibility.   I am sure that the tabloids have lined up a number of even more lurid scare stories for the last week when panic will really set in amongst the tories as all their papering over the cracks of the ‘long term economic plan’ start to fall away.   Of course Labour will not help themselves as they try and twist and turn about the cuts they will implement or pay for some outlandish pledge they have made.

In truth no one knows what the complexion of the next government will be.  The one thing that did come out of yesterday’s debate was that Britain is no longer a two party state which in turn means that a very plural approach to forming a sustainable government will have to be adopted.  Will David Cameron head that government or Ed Miliband ?  I haven’t got the first idea but I think what I wrote the other day will be vital and we could find that the only truly UK wide party will be the Lib Dems and who they wish to make deals with will be at the very centre of the politics to come.

Project LV One – Day 338 – A bit of Penn and Ink

A bit of Pen and Ink

For most of my adult life I have been aware of Truman Capote but I’m afraid to admit know little of his work.  According to his Wiki page his books are recognised literary classics but they have passed me by.  This drawing has a feel of the film noir about it so it may have some relevance to Capote’s work but as I have not read any of his books how would I know?

Project LV One – Day 337 – Joining the Dots

Packhorse Bridge - Enderby

Every now and then I wonder what the hell have I done with my life?  I guess we all do from time to time.  However, there is one object that has come to dominate my life in a way that I really couldn’t imagine.  The object in question is this, a medieval packhorse bridge over the River Soar.  For most people as they rush by in their cars they probably wouldn’t even notice the bridge.  However, I have spent more than seven years trying to answer one simple question – why is the bridge there?

There is a straightforward answer to this, to allow pack horses to cross the River Soar but this doesn’t really come close to answering the question.  As I started to explore this question other questions started to arise and from this I started my historical research which is nowhere near complete.   The quest for the answer has taken me all over the english midlands and all the way over to the medieval port of Boston in Lincolnshire.

One day I feel I will be able to truly finish the quest but that day is a long long way away.
