The art of visiting an exhibition

Yesterday I spent the day in London visiting the Royal Academy and the National Gallery. It was a cold day but fun nonetheless, however this is not the point of this post. Over the past three years I have visited many, and I mean many, exhibitions and galleries all over the country and so am now well able to pass on these words of wisdom to anyone wishing to visit an exhibition or gallery but not really sure how to do it.

For me there is only one lesson – don’t rush and try and pack in too much. Of course if you are time limited then this can seem to be frivolous …’ I’ve only got one day so I must pack in as much as I can…’ For me this is an understandable attitude but a big mistake. Part of the deep joy of visiting art galleries and exhibitions is the ability to ruminate on what you have seen. Now if you try and pack too much in then everything starts to become a blur and much of the joy is lost.

To this end the cafe or restaurant is as much a part of the visit as the actual art. Having a cup of tea/coffee etc and contemplating what you have seen is vital. As you memory fades, for some of us much quicker than others, then you start to forget but sitting down and discussing things helps to cement the memories. In fact the reflect element of this cannot be overstated and if this all sound so very bourgeois it is not. You really need the time to reflect otherwise the whole thing becomes a jumble. This is all the more true at galleries like the National which has masterpieces on every wall.

Well that is my view and I’m sure it is not the way a lot of people visit galleries and exhibitions but this works for me.

After Manet

I’m off out tomorrow to see the Manet exhibition at the Royal Academy. In an effort to get into the mood I have made this quick painting on brushes in the style of Manet and is based on the front cover of RA magazine. The actual painting is called Berthe Morisot with a Bouquet of Violets.

Lets hope the exhibition is as good as suggested.

EMails will always get you in the end

EMail has been around for a while now and you would have thought by now that people should have realise that you only put into an email what you would be happy to be seen on the front page of a newspaper. Yet time and again it would seem that people think that emails are in any way confidential…they are not.

Of course it is not just emails that can get people in hot water.

‘…. Obama as Joffery..the spoiled boy king who’s out of his league! With any luck he’ll end up about a foot shorter!…’

Sports Illustrated Feature

This was a comment on Facebook and I suspect the comment was left when no real thought as to what it says. Perhaps I’m misreading this but is the person who left this wishing for the execution by decapitation of the President of the United Sates? I’m sure that should some gentleman or lady from the FBI were to pay this man a visit then I’m sure he would be profoundly shocked. And of course if the FBI have any problems finding him he has left wonderful amount of information on Facebook to help in his apprehension.

From ill conceived comments like this, to the Libor scandal to Vicky Price its the emails wot helped to convict them. In Watergate the journalists were told to follow the money. Now it would seem to be Read the Emails. Goodness only knows what Richard M. Nixon would have put in his emails if it had been around at the time.

Waiting to get a ticket

This morning I had to go to the East Midlands Parkway railway station whilst a friend of a friend bought a ticket. This gave me chance to make a a few photographs. Just to think in a few years time these will no longer be here – it really will be a shame as these iconic cooling towers are the Angel of the North for the East Midlands.

Memento Mori

So the plan of action was clear and well thought through. The new model for the life drawing class was male and so I should work on my male nude drawing – check. All going to plan then I get to the class and I find we have a female model, who I’ve worked with before, and suddenly all my plans feel by the way side. The second things was the tutor suggested using something I wasn’t prepared for and really the night didn’t work out the way way I wanted.

For me I just want to draw, with either charcoal or pastel, and when I can’t do this I start to flounder a bit as I need time to think about these things and of course in a 2 hour session, time is something you just don’t have. In the end I gave up on the whole process and returned to what I wanted to do – draw. However, whether I wasn’t in the mood or the whole watercolour experiment had thrown me I don’t know. The only meaningful piece of work I produced was this and I feel that this is more a drawing of a dead body than a reclining nude. This will always be my memento mori.

What I was doing three years ago

Is it really three years since I captured this action? Well I guess it must be – bit has my life changed since then. Back then it was all wild life, particularly wild bird photography. Now…well it is somewhat different. Who knows which way life will go – I don’t.

Continually getting hits

These two images continue to get hits on my Flickr account. They are now over three years old so are buried deep in the bowls of Flickr yet they keep being found. I suspect the Canadian Goose landing is being used somewhere else on the internet but as to where that might be I have yet to find out.

I came across this in my sketchbook, the drawings from the page below showing through onto the front page.

Moving the the male form

This morning I woke up with the idea to practice drawing the male form so after an early breakfast this was what I produced. It is far from perfect but this is the point. The more you practice the better you get so I’ll be doing a lot of these drawings today.

By why the male form? it is really quite simple the art class that I attend on Wednesday now has a male model and so I need to practice this.

One final thing. Trying to find a reasonable image of a male nude on line is surprisingly difficult. There is all manner of gay porn icons available and I’m sure that is fine if that is what you are looking for but not so if you want an ‘artistic’ form. In fact I found it more difficult than for a woman.
