So perhaps it is working I don’t know…

Back to Brushes…I haven’t made anything with this for months and two in the space of a week. I guess this is half finished ish….I never really know until it is finished but she is coming along just fine at the moment.

Decoding the past

Saltgate m.13 (1404), p. 1250 (1404) bis

Just what does this mean? I’ve spent quite a bit of this afternoon decoding this cryptic clue – however, once you know what the code is it makes sense…sort of.

So when does history start? The notation above is from a PhD thesis by Dr Barrie Cox. Thanks to Dr Cox I don’t have to spend all my life wading through old manuscripts in vain hope of finding something of interest – he has done all that work for me. Thank you Dr Cox. The only problem is this thesis was written on an old manual typewriter and published in 1971. This means that the way that he has set things out needs to be decoded before you start to decode the even older history. Still with me? Dr Cox had several pages of useful notes on what all the abbreviations meant but it still took quite a while to make sense of things.

So here is actually what the entry means:

Saltgate, from a manuscript purporting to have been recorded in the middle of the 13th century, however the copy available is dated 1404, personal name of Saltgate purporting to have been recorded in 1250 however the copy available is dated 1404.

So far so good. But what does bis mean? Well the only answer I could find to this was it means twice – there was nothing in the thesis to indicate this. I can only assume that this was a common term when the theses was written but here in 2013 not so much and I had to spend some time looking on the internet to find the answer.

What this reminds me of is the short hand used by the scribe writing the Domesday entries. He used an arcane abbreviation that take some time to understand but once you do things start to make sense.

So when decoding history you have to be aware that it is closer than you think.

What are you going to do when you’re not saving the world?

It has been a busy few days with the web site starting to come into some sort of focus. Still a long day to go but I feel I’m closer to the end than the beginning. I worked out that I spent 9 hours writing, checking facts and then creating a series of new illustrations for the site. I knew I’d done enough for one day when I started making an awful lot of unforced errors. So what better way to unwind than to make a simple drawing. Of course this is a total falsehood because no sooner had I started that I just wanted to make this as good as I could which of course is unlikely when you are tired. Still I think she is an interesting face. So off to bed – will sleep well tonight…I hope.

One of these days …fearless.

You are my Angel…comes on wings from above…neutralize every man inside

It has been a busy few days and I’m not sure I know when it will end.   For some time, and I mean some time – years really, I’ve been threatening to rewrite a history web site and I’m now doing it.  There was no plan other than one day I thought it would be a good idea.  This was in the beginning of November and now I’m really pulling things together but it is really hard work.

Print

It really is rewarding making graphics for the site…the only thing is that I’m a bit of a perfectionist and so spend far more time on things than I should do.  Coupled with my having to refresh/relearn my limited HTML skills things are taken a long time.  At least I’m a lot happier with the look and feel of the site – many sites I feel are just too messy and don’t follow the simple maxim – just because you can doesn’t mean you should.  The one final hurdle is that I suffer from a form of word blindness – whether it is dyslexia or some form of problem I don’t know.  However when I’m proof reading the text I have take it very slowly – one paragraph at a time.  So I’m just about on target for the relaunch in January next.  We’ll see how far I miss that deadline by!!

In the mean time I have found time to do one or two other things – perhaps why this is taking so long.

Nothing can compare to roll the dice.

A Man With a Hat

A lot of things going on at the moment so I only have the creative juices for a quick sketch here and there. This is one I made this morning which is a multi media ink drawing/digital painting .

DPReview Recommends: Best Compact Cameras for Travel: Digital Photography Review

http://www.dpreview.com/articles/7118583476/dpreview-recommends-best-compact-cameras-for-travel?utm_source=notification&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=generic

This is a fascinating article but I feel totally misses the point. If you are travelling the best camera that you need is you phone camera…little hassle, always with you etc. if this is the case then in my humble opinion you cannot beat the iPhone 5s. Another attack of the Apple Fan Boy syndrome me thinks!

Welcome back brushes

I’ve just checked and it is nearly two months since I made a painting using Brushes…what have I been doing with my time? Anyway I quite like jovial cove – almost a bit Falstaffesque. I also think that the looser you get with brushes the better the results…only taken me about three years to work that one out!

Giraffe

Having just watched the Imagine programme about the remarkable Judith Kerr I felt compelled to make a drawing of a giraffe…not sure why a giraffe but that doesn’t matter right now. Anyway, my first giraffe was from memory and had all the anatomical features of some who had never seen a giraffe before. Anyway, I think this one is slightly better.
