Day out at the Duke’s new place

Dry stopne wall - Creswell Crags Gates - Portland Gallery Lafarge Whitwell Quary - Creswell

Had another great day out visiting a new local tourist attraction the Portland Collection at the Harley Gallery in Nottingham.   The pre visit bumph would suggest that the Portland Collection is a world beater and that in one sense is true, there are some incredible works of art on display.  However,  I did come away feeling slightly underwhelmed which I suspect is more to do with the fact that the collection might have been over sold, or certainly the works on display.  There were some great pieces but  when it is compared to say the fascinating Compton Verney it falls somewhat short of the mark.  This, though, is unfair on the Harley Gallery as they are two very different establishments trying to do very different things.

Having outlined my slight misgivings it is still worth a visit although don’t expect to eat at the small cafe next to the gallery as this would seem to be too small for the crowds that the collection may attract.  However, help is at hand as the garden centre next door has a very reasonable cafe.

But then she

The Devil In Disguise 02

It is back to school for me…I’ve had my pencil now for nearly a fortnight and I think it is time that I settled down and try to get a real feel for how I can use this new piece of kit.  To do this I have decided to make a painting of the same image again and again – each time trying to learn from the last.  It is hardly creative but it is good way to reinforce lessons learnt.  Only problem is after a while it can get really monotonous.  Are well here goes.

Oh Henry don’t be unkind

The Devil In Disguise

Yesterday this blog experiance a huge, by this blog’s standards, leap in hits and I just couldn’t understand it.   However, today I noticed what was the most popular search on this blog which was rather strange subject, “simon lover 2016 blog” so I decided to Google this and suddenly all became clear as the first hit on Google for this was a Gay Porn blog.   So should you have wished to have gone  to that particular blog and found yourself here may I welcome you and also disappoint you – you won’t find any gay porn here just my ramblings and scribblings which may be enough to turn you off sex for ever.   I suspect by now the wayward searcher may well have disappeared so goodbye to you  and I hope you enjoy what you find.

The lament of getting old – a work in progress.

Adam and Eve Swedish Painter 01

Somedays I feel like I was 18 again but those days seem to becoming less and less frequent, instead replaced by the creeping realisation that whilst I sometimes feel 18 my body certainly doesn’t anymore!  I guess this is the curse of being the wrong side of 50 which all of us above (or should that be below!) that plimsol line know only too well.  Little niggles and sniffles that we used to fight off with ease no longer seem to disappear as quickly; Aches and pains seem to be far more commonplace and their effects all the greater .  However on the bright side I get to play with new toys such as my new Apple Pencil so things aren’t all bad.

The more I use my pencil the more I learn and the more I realise I don’t know – actually that applies to my art rather than the pencil but why the truth get in the way of bad poetry!  The painting is partially completed and I think I need to step back and think about where I go from here but it has been a great learning curve nonetheless.

Emptiness and Harmony

Red Lady No 02 The Devine

Well that was a fine way to celebrate Easter – get yet another cold or whatever – I think that is the third of this year alone…summer can’t get here a moment too soon.  So to pass the time of day I have been working with my pencil  – actually that is not strictly true, yesterday I felt like shit so I wasn’t able to do anything than sit there and flick through the TV channels – why is Fox news full of such hateful know it alls?  Perhaps that was the cold talking…may be not.  It is funny watching Fox news now trying to dump on Trump seeing as they helped create the monster that is Donald J. Trump.  Mind you the likely alternative is by some stretch even worse – still I guess not all Canadian’s are good mannered after all.

Beautiful Stranger

Madge No 2 Red Haired Woman The Devine Devine

Different steps and slowly making progress…actually that sounds if I have an overall goal which couldn’t be further from the truth.  That being said there is one over arching goal…have a great bank holiday and I can’t think of a better way of spending the bank holiday than creating art.

Mission Accomplished.

Initial thoughts on a Fruits Based pencil

Hard Cruel World MM 004

So two days have passed since starting my new life with my Fruit Based Pencil and a few things are starting to coalesce:  Firstly the iPad Pro is huge in comparison to my old iPad.  I know this should be filed under the ‘stating the bleeding obvious’ but it is a real culture shock.  The one thing this has proven is that it you want to use the pencil then the small iPad just isn’t the way forward so the launch of the smaller iPad pro by Apple may well be a big mistake;  Secondly, the pencil is just a little awkward  to have around.  It is great to use but then where do you put it when not using?  One tip I have found is that as it is magnetic it can stick to the official iPad Pro cover.  Whilst this works it is still a little precarious and this is, after all, an expensive pencil to replace.   I have some ideas how to get around this but time will tell whether it works.

As for the drawing/art experience well I have spent most of the weekend trying to get my head around Procreate so I can only talk about that. (I did spend 5 minutes looking at the Adobe Illustrator App but as you can see this was only the most rudimentary of examination!)

Face

Procreate is a really complicated package for the money you pay and you need to spend time to try and get the best from it.  I really don’t intend to write a review of the software as that is really pointless as the only thing that really matters is whether you, as the user, can produce what you want with the app.  To date I am still a little disappointed with what I have made but then again when isn’t that the case.  If you want to use Procreate then be prepared to have to put the time in but it is worth it.  As for the pencil, well they seem to have been made for one another.  Again I am still learning my way around the best ways to use the pencil but I think these two are a marriage made in heaven – lets hope it doesn’t end a bitter divorce.

One final thing I want to mention and app I have discovered called Astropad.  By the  magic of Wifi connectivity it allows you to mirror your Mac on you iPad.   This means you are able to get around one of the really frustrating things about the iPad, especially when compared to the Microsoft Surface Pro, you can’t run full blown programs, such as Illustrator or Photoshop on your iPad.  With this app, I believe as I haven’t actually tried it out, you control you Mac from your iPad thus turning you iPad into a graphics tablet for your Mac.  It sounds great but whether it works is another matter and I guess I won’t be trying it any time soon as already have a Wacom connected to the Mac but it is worth noting for future reference.

So two days in the pencil is great as is the hardware required to use it.  I still have a great deal to learn about the pencil but I guess the more time I put into it the better things will come out…lets hope.

Happy Easter.

More Practices

MM Combined

Practice makes perfect so the old wives or husband’s tail goes…well this is the result of today’s practice.  One of the great features of Recreate is that it makes a little films of your progress…unfortunately I have yet to work out exactly how to post this into a WordPress blog…a bit of rummaging around in the Internet is required me thinks.
