The Northern Powerhouse

LCE

A real sign of the times…Camera stores, which formed the cornerstone of many photographer’s, both amateur and professional, lives are a thing of the past.  Passing this at Manchester Piccadilly was a sad reminder of what the internet helped to kill – I am not sure we are the better for it.

Will Murray Win

On a lighter note I am not at all sure which Murray was going to win what?  It was suggested by my traveling companion it might have been Bill Murray to win an Oscar.  Who Knows?

Talking of my travelling companion…

Davids Hat So an interesting day was had in Manchester which, now we have a new Prime Minister and a move worthy of 1984, is no longer to be called the Northern Powerhouse.  Instead?  Not sure but I’m sure the government spin department or is that the Ministry of Truth has had a go we will no doubt find out.  What we do know is that like George Osborne Northern Powerhouse are non words.  Enough of the 1984 references I think.

Tears of a clown…

Tears of the clown

The one thing that is certain, I don’t have a vote in the forthcoming United States of America presidential election.  This doesn’t mean however that I don’t have an interest in the outcome.   Unlike what many of ‘the Donald’s’ supporters might believe America is great already.  From outside the US all the rest of us see is a massively successful country, something to look up to, envy and perhaps fear.  The post world war 2 world has been built on perhaps two presumptions beyond all else: Nuclear war is unwinnable and that the current incumbent the West Wing gets that.   However, as things stand I am not sure that would be the case should Donald Trump gets to move his office from New York to Washington.  It might sound great in his head for the President of the USA to be unpredictable, it might work in business negotiations, although I doubt it as a long term strategy because any negotiation has to be built on a level of trust, but it is certainly not a workable strategy for the leader of the world’s most powerful military which includes the destructive power of nuclear weapons.  If you can’t trust what the US is going to do next then all that will result in is that the advisories of the US will arm themselves even more or become more unpredictable themselves.  How that makes the world a safer place I am not sure?

Another worrying thing from outside the the US is that he just doesn’t get the complexities of the world.  Take for example the Crimea.  He has asked “I mean, do you want to go back, do you want to have World War III to get it [Crimea] back? “   The answer to that question is of course not.  However, life is not that simple and not too far away to the north there are three NATO countries that look a lot like Crimea or Ukraine, Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia where there are large Russian populations.   What would Donald Trump’s reaction be should one of these countries start to have problems with their much bigger neighbour?  They are NATO members but are they worth starting World War 3 over?  If not then which countries are worth the sacrifice?  Poland? Norway? Canada?  The only way that NATO works is that their advisories believe that an attack on one country is an attack on all and so would be treated as such.

You see what the President of the USA says matters.  This also applies to either of the main candidates running for the office.   I am not sure Donald Trump gets this yet.  Perhaps he will.  Perhaps he will realise that the world is far more complicated than 140 characters on Twitter and that everything he does, says, every mannerism will be examined in minute detail to find clues as to what he might do.  One wrong step doesn’t mean you have to hide behind chapter 9 bankruptcy for a while but rather we are all ducking for cover.

I am sure that should any supporter of Donald Trump reading this may well disagree with what I have said about Mr Trump.  I am pretty sure they will feel angry that some person, who is not an American  citizen thinks they have the right to suggest that Donald Trump is in any way unfit for office.  On one level they are right but we live in an American world and what America does really really matters to the rest of us.  The Donald Trump supporter might think that America isn’t great at the moment but no one other than his supporters believe that.   Even America’s worst enemies accept this and try and attack them in such a way as to not to bring the full force of American power down on their head.   Living in an interconnected world means that the most powerful country has to be aware that what it does matters and with greater the power comes the greater reasonability.  I am just not sure that Donald Trump is the right man to have that responsibility.

I guess the lord must be in New York City

Iain Dowie Tilda Sketch

In an effort to try and purge the thoughts generated by a possible oncoming disaster of ‘The Donald’ I have gone back to the start and started to make a series of sketches.

There’s somethin’ ’bout Tulip

There is something about Tulip

It was the time of the Preacher…as Willie Nelson wrote and that is certainly how I feel.  The first season of Preacher has been a real breath of fresh air a fillip in this ever increasingly crazy world.   Yes I know that it is a blood soaked programme fill of the worst types but compared to the real world well it is heaven on earth.  Over blown a bit that last sentence but it reflects how I feel about how the world is going at the moment rather than placing far too much emphasis on a TV programme.

Of the six central characters only five appear at the moment to be around for the next season, although the sixth probably is as well but to say anymore would be to spoil things and if you want that then why not take a look at The Guardian spoiler heavy review of the first season – well done Stuart Heritage.  The one character who , more than anyone else for me , stands out above the rest is Tulip played by the wonderful Ruth Negga.  A more badass girl you could not wish to meet but yet through it all there is a sense of, I was going to say vulnerability but that is far too unfair on Tulip.  No she would just as easy shot you in the heart as break your heart.  For such warmth and hard steel Negga must take most of the credit.

So there we are I am fan boy and can’t wait until next season.  If you want one reason to get Amazon Prime, other than the free delivery which I know isn’t free at all, then Preacher is it.  End of puff piece.

PS…I’ve just read on Wiki that Negga and Dominic Cooper, Preacher,  are an item…explains the on screen chemistry.

Switch Tower

City of London

It has been a long day and I am not thinking straight but having spent the day at Tate Modern and especially the new Switch Tower extension with which, I have to say, I am underwhelmed. Of course it can be argued what do I know?  And that would be a reasonable argument but to me it  symbolises much of the problems this country is facing.  It seems that no one thinks it is wrong to splash so much money on an already fabulously supported arts institution and get so little in return.  Yet if you were to suggest that the same amount of funding should be spent supporting arts institutions around the country then the metropolitan arts establishment would be in uproar at their loss.  Now I didn’t make it up to the viewing platform so it can’t give a fully rounded view, no pun intended, but when does a viewing platform make an art museum?

So what does the tower consist of?  Well four floors of artwork that are, at best, ok.  Four floors of office space, a floor for Tate members and the viewing platform.  I believe the whole thing cost over £200 million, I might be wrong on that figure as I cannot confirm the cost anywhere online – too tired to really try very hard.   Nothing about this tower makes any sense to me unless you think that London is the only place where ‘art’ should be seen and that it is the duty of the state to support such a notion.  If, however, you believe that the Tate collection has been paid for by the whole of Britain and so it should have art galleries outside of London, I know it has got branches in Liverpool and St Ives but is that the best that can be done?   How about a Tate/Yorkshire Sculpture park or a Tate/Baltic Exchange or Tate Scotland or Tate Wales or Tate Belfast?   Now I am sure much of the Tate collection is shared with institutions around the country but do any of them see anything like the money spent on what I feel is an Oligarc’s tower?  I suspect the answer is no.

One final thought.  The Tate holds the Turner bequest for the nation and you would have thought that an ideal place for much of this to be displayed would be at the Turner Contemporary at Margate   – you would be wrong.   The art establishment wouldn’t allow it and so this fine building fails to achieve its aim of helping to regenerate a neglected corner of Britain.  And the establishment wonders why the great unwashed outside of London rebelled against their advice in the referendum campaign.   The rule seems to be spend money in London pay lip service to anywhere else.  I doubt things will change anytime soon.

Note to myself – this sounds awfully kipperish but the contempt displayed by Tate and their tower would drive anyone towards the frothing purple brigade.   I may well wake up in the morning and regret this but…

PS – around 24 hours after I wrote this rant.

I still feel angry by the waste of money – money that would have been better spent outside of London.  In fact I think an even better approach would be to move the whole of the Tate institution away from London completely.   They should be moved to some brownfield side in the north Midlands or South Yorkshire, perhaps Grimethorpe, which would be the centre of the nation as a whole.   They could run Tate expresses from St Pancras as these old industrial areas would have excellent rail links.  It won’t happen of course for the same reasons that were poked fun at 30 years ago in Yes Prime Minister even though this would go a long way to really regenerating whole areas of Britain that need the help.   So much for the Northern Powerhouse, although I believe that has now been shelved for May’s?   I am not sure but if her words meant anything, a huge if as big as the Switch Tower then a cost neutral scheme of moving out of over priced London to ‘cheap’ South Yorkshire.  While we’re at it how about a few other moves:

  • National Maritime Museum to Portsmouth:
  • Imperial War Museum to Duxford:
  • Science Museum to Manchester:
  • National Theatre to leave the South Bank and became a touring troupe around the country. (Yes Prime Minister been here already and is just as illuminating)

I feel my purple rage starting up again and don’t even get me started on lack of any true local democracy.

It seems that sleeping on something doesn’t make me calm down…I just don’t believe it!

Purging the left side of my brain

Looking in the Mirror

Busy busy day trying to work out where exactly a medieval deer park may have been situated.  Absorbing work but after a while it does get very tiring so as bit of light relief a quick sketch to try and balance my lobes.

Bullocks - Cotes Wymeswold Green

Another day in paradise…a bit soggy around the edges but compared to so many of my fellow citizens of the world paradise on earth – so why do I feel so apprehensive about the future?   If you want a more sensible view on today’s wonderings through Charnwood check out my fellow traveller David’s blog.  It always makes more sense than mine.

Spinning

Preacher

I have to say that I am just a little bit obsessed by the Preacher series at the moment.  Whether this is escapism from the real crapshot that life is becoming I am not sure but perhaps the most depressing thing about all this is this:  I first became aware of Preacher probably 10 years ago when my son started reading the graphic novel – 10 YEARS!   Where did those years go?   The older you get the smaller proportion of your life 10 years becomes.  When you are ten it is 100% of your life when you are chasing sixty then that is less than a fifth – time passes at the same time but the older you get it just became a smaller element – hence the sense that things are speeding up…whatever the reason 10 years ago seems only like yesterday.
