Unknown Unknowns….

So there we have it – Donald J. Trump has been elected President of the United States of America.   I thought that there was a 60% chance that Mrs Clinton would have made it over the line whereas Trump was 40%.   However, I had little enthusiasm for Mrs Clinton it was just that she seemed much better than the alternative.  However, the alternative has won and so we need to accept that and wish him well in his endeavours as he is about to get a huge reality check about the difference between rhetoric and governing.   I haven’t got the first idea as to what President he will make which is true of all first time Presidents.   The difference with President elect Trump is that he has no real record at all other than his various business endeavours which have been patchy to say the least.

As for the wider message of this  election what does that tells us about the world at the moment?    It is far far too early to even contemplate answering this other than to say that people who might be described as forming the elite, be they politicians, media commentators or the influential have had their noses put out of joint much the same way that this was the case after Brexit.   How this change will be felt in the long run is anyone’s guess but if a Trump Presidency  has anything like the transformative effect that Brexit has in this country then who knows what the world will look like in four years time.

One final thought.   Yesterday I suggested that things were far from rosy in European Union, the Commision is possibly the most remote of elites there is in the west.   So how they react to a Trump Presidency is going to affect how the Brexit negotiations are undertaken.   Perhaps, just perhaps, they might feel sufficiently crestfallen to actually enter into meaningful negotiations to the mutual benefit of both the EU and Britain with trying to ‘punishing’ Britain for the temerity of pushing back against the EU.   If this is the case then from a European perspective  President Trump might have been positive outcome.   I suspect this is a far too simplistic approach to the whole maelstrom that Mr Trump has released.

So congratulation to Donald Trump he fought the election and won.  We all now have to hope that the Donald Trump on the election trail is not the Donald Trump who has the nuclear launch codes at his finger tips after January 2017.   Only time will tell.

Some more thoughts on the Brexit nonsense

I really cannot state enough just how thin skinned some of the Brexiteers are.   They won the referendum and Britain is going to leave the EU yet this doesn’t seem to be good enough for them.   Instead they seem to think that this must mean that everything written, discussed or thought about must comply with their rather narrow view of what the world should look like.   This is simply wrong and they should try and mature a little.

Now that being said what I am about to write may sound in total contrast to what I have written above so here goes.   I think that Britain will leave the EU under the so called Hard Brexit conditions.  The reason why I say that is that I believe the single biggest issue in the referendum was immigration.   It doesn’t matter one jot that this position is economically nonsensical I believe it to be the prevailing view of the majority of the country and as no one in power seems to want to try and change this view then this is going to be the main red line in the negotiations for Britain.   This of course is a red line for the EU as well and so will limit any chance of negotiations around this point.   This doesn’t mean that there won’t be any agreements made during the talks it just means that sometime in 2019 Britain and EU will have a very different trading and immigration relationship.

There will be huge costs on both sides if accommodations are not found to make this as amicable as possible.   It will also take years for all the ramifications of this separation to be worked through and I suspect both sides will pay a heavy cost as far as future prosperity is concerned.  Nonetheless I cannot see any other way forward and the sooner everyone in Britain comes to accept this and try and make the most of it the better.  I suspect most companies have already started to do this which will mean money that should have been spent on investment will have to be diverted but who said Freedom was cheap.

Probably the biggest loser’s in all this will be the millions of EU citizens who already live in Britain as they will have to register and be treated as immigrants rather than Europeans.   How this is managed is unclear but given the Home Offices track record I wouldn’t hold out too much hope that it will be seen as a job well done.

The next biggest loser will be the Republic of Ireland who may well start to realise just how dependent they are on the British market for their goods and services and a very chill wind may well blow their way after the type of exit I suspect is going to happen.   I dare not even speculate as to how this will affect the peace process in Northern Ireland other than to say that it won’t help things.

With Ireland in mind I suspect the SNP’s dream of an independent Scotland may well evaporate as the Irish provide a painful lesson of what happens when your largest export market decides what is best (debatable point) for it and shows little regard for your problems.   This is not even taking account of the fiscal problems that Scotland could face outside of the UK.  In short I suspect that the SNP may have passed their peak support and more normal politics, that is a nation with a number of political parties rather than one dominant, will return to Scotland.   This being said I suspect that by the end of all this Scotland will probably have true Home Rule with only very limited interference from London, the so called Devo Max option on steroids.

As for the EU I suspect they are going to go through changes the likes of which few will have experienced before.   This isn’t to over blow the role Britain played in the EU but it was the second largest economy and country by population (Both arguable I accept) and a large net contributor to the EU budget.  I suspect after Britain has left the EU Commision will try and pretend nothing has changed only to find this is far from the truth.   In future I suspect that the EU will fragment into blocs far more than is the case so far.  They might even see further countries leave, I suspect that Sweden might be the next which would further isolate the Germans.  The French will try to provide leadership only to discover that they are in a reduced position when facing the other 26 nations and qualified majority voting.   The old eastern bloc may well start to act in a very similar way as they do in the Eurovision song contest (stupid example I know but rather telling) as they fight to maintain the large EU handouts they currently receive which, of course, were being paid for to a greater or lesser extent by the British budget contribution.   And this is before we even start to bring up the unresolved problems associated with the Euro and the mediterranean countries which again will loop back onto German.  Then there are the banks….I could go on.

In short without clear and enlightened leadership from the European Commision the shock of Britain leaving the EU could well be the catalyst for one all mighty clusterfuck.   This will be to no one’s advantage which brings us full circle to what happens during the next two years of negotiations and whether they are enlightened or stupid point scoring.   Of course the whole process may well take a different route with the kind assistance of  the President of the United States of America, the gifted, reasonable and diplomatic Donald J. Trump!

Listening to John Williams

autumn-trees-and-leaves walker-and-cyclist war-memorial

Yesterday I had an outbreak of ‘Fresher’s Flu’ which of course is nonsense for a number of reasons which those who know me well will be able to quickly identify.   So in an effort to clear away the damaging virus/bug I went a walk around Victoria Park in Leicester and a more beautiful day you could not have wished for.   As you can see I brought my new baby with me and at the moment it hasn’t disappointed.  I especially like the 16/70mm Zeiss designed lens which seemed to absorb the brilliant autumn colours and then gave them an extra punch.  Nonsense again  but only partly as anyone who has used good quality lens will testify – you tend to get what you pay for.

So time for a couple more paracetamol and then lunch, what an appetiser !?!

Revisiting old questions

signpost turbine windfarm-and-gate windfarm-at-dawn

In 2014 I asked a question that I still have no answer to – just how do you make something interesting?   It is something I still have no real answer to but I have been thinking about on and off ever since and especially this morning as a I reacquainted myself with the joys of capturing images at dawn on a frosty late autumn morning – how do I make four large wind turbines, which I have named the four horsemen of the apocalypse, interesting or perhaps that question need to be redefined as How do I make an interesting photograph of these giant symbols of post industrial Britain?   As I stood on top of the Jurassic ridge that stretches across the heart of southern england I realised I hadn’t got the first clue other than just keep making images in the vain hope that something might just turn up.   So with that less than inspiring aim I am going to spend the winter visiting and revisiting the site until something comes along.

Another day another fine mess we seem to be getting ourselves into

It seems that when the history of the Brexit saga is finally written today maybe seen as the day we finally walked through the looking glass and declared that we are no longer in Kansas (too many mixed metaphors I think). Today all those MPs who didn’t want Brexit declared that they do – sort of and all those Brexiters who claimed that they want to leave the EU so that Parliament could be sovereign have been fuming when judges had the temerity of actually agreeing with them and said that Parliament is sovereign indeed, even over the wishes of the executive.

Just to recap – a non binding referendum was narrowly won by the Leave side which the Conservative government said they would be bound by the result.  That Conservative government then collapsed and was reformed under a new leader who reiterated the election manifesto – Brexit means Brexit.   Just to prove this she refused to allow Parliament to have any say on how things were to be organised – claiming an ancient prerogative to allow her to start the leave process herself.  Then things started to go wrong and Parliament started to demand that she explain what she was hoping to get  out of the negotiations – which seemed to upset the Government with the thought of having to explain themselves to the British people.   Finally, the whole approach of the Government was declared illegal leaving many Brexiters muttering darkly about the judiciary trying to undermine the will of the people by informing the people’s representatives that actually as far as the constitution is concerned it is up to MP’s and possibly Lords to decided what the will of the people was not the executive.

So we are back at square one.   Nobody really knows which way is up or down and won’t do so until after the Supreme Court rules on the case probably sometime in January next year. (I Believe that this could then be appealed to the European Court of Human Rights – but that would be taking a joke just a little bit too far…wouldn’t it?) Oh and finally just to add another layer to the confusion the Scottish Government are looking at ways that they can join in the fun – as if things weren’t messed up enough already!

Actually I do have some sympathy with the Brexiters, there’s something I didn’t think I would write, because there are an awful lot of remain MPs using weasel words because they don’t want to upset their constituents who voted for Brexit.  So they are now for Brexit and support the result of the referendum, sort of, as long it serves their own political expediency.  At least the Brexiters are sticking to their long held views, the same could not be said about so many other MPs at the moment.

Not too long ago I wrote a blog about the strange set of circumstances that might bring Jeremy Corbyn to power.   Over the past few days the likelihood of all those strange sets of circumstances coming together  has somewhat increased.

I think the Brexiters should calm down and accept the ruling of the court whose job it is to try and determine what is legal and what is not.   If it is Parliament’s role to permit Article 50 to be activated then this, like the referendum, has to be accepted.  I think that the Remain MPs should also be more honest and explain what their true views are as this at least is the easiest thing to explain to their constituents.   Finally, I think the Government should hang their collective heads in shame.  They are trying railroad one of the most important decisions this country has to make without any consideration of what Parliament’s wishes might be.   The only thing that the British people voted for back in June was to leave the European Union.   Everything else should be talked about and consulted upon – if that takes time then that is how it should be and I suspect we might have a better solution at the end which the British people might feel best reflects their views and needs.  How you determine that is anybody’s guess – no wait we already have a method in place – it is called Parliament which, after today, has once more been proven to be sovereign (Appeal Pending).

As my good friend keeps telling…’…You couldn’t make this up…’

Small Town Girl

The first road test of the new camera and lens and I think the best thing to say is that it is really nice to be able once more to have access to a proper 24 mm lens to 105mm lens. ( I know that is factually incorrect as the new lens I am using is 16mm to 70mm – but the effect is still the same.)   The second thing is to have a rewarding clunk when the shutter is released (again this is is an effected added by Sony because the camera doesn’t have a shutter as such but the effect is so rewarding).   As for the images I’ll let you decide but I am quite pleased with them as well which actually is the soul point of the exercise.   Things are looking promising.

Batteries are the pain of modern life as well as making modern life work.  Without the battery many of the functions we take for granted in the rich world would not be possible so we should embrace them.  What we shouldn’t do is get upset when a new piece of electrical equipment turns up and the battery needs charging.  We shouldn’t but then again we are human so…  CAN’T THIS THING CHARGE ANY FASTER?   to misquote Lady Gaga.

All good things….

So autumn is really truly upon us.   Today we expect things to be golden in the autumn but it wasn’t always the case as many of the ‘autumnal’ trees and shrubs have been imported from around the world. Damn foreigners coming over here and making our autumns just that little bit more interesting.   Two of the images here were captured by by iPhone and two were captured by my Canon G1x…I’m not sure you can tell the difference…something to think about.
