One final session today

20100907-_linda_3c

Well I’m out tomorrow so I won’t be able to do anything on Linda.  This is not a bad thing as I feel a little distance will help matters.  So this is the last Linda for a day or so.

Another hour or so – things are shaping up a little more

20100907-_linda_3b

It really is useful to take your time with these things.  I’ve now worked on Linda for another or so and things are starting to come together.  This doesn’t mean I am happy with what I have done but I have yet to develop the cold blooded skill of junking whole sections of a painting – there is far too much work and emotional attachment with these things.  However, it will come – after all I am ruthless with my photographs.  But not just yet.

It really is a useful learning process to complete another section and then look back on what you have done.   This encourages an iterative approach and allows plenty of time to reflect on how things are going and change things, hopefully for the better.  This really is the best way to learn, do, reflect, identify improvements and do again.  I seem to remember talking about such matters when I was a trainer – may that was a long time ago!

Anyway she is coming along – not sure where to but that is part of the fun.

Learning another lesson.

20100907-_linda_no_3a

I have a had a morning to reflect on the painting I produced.  Perhaps a morning is not enough but there we are.  Anyway, as a result of the period of reflection I have come to one obvious and yet hidden truth.  There is no rush, take your time and really look at what you are painting.  So with this in mind I am embarking on Linda no 3.  It has taken over an hour to get this far, and the truth all I have done is laid down the foundations.  I intend to take my time with Linda No 3.

On top of the revelation that there is no time limit I have also looked at the composition of Linda 2 and tried to identify where I have gone wrong.   I have picked up up points that I need to work on and hopefully they have been improved in Linda no 3.   I have every confidence that this will not be the last Linda.

A second go – something better something’s not so

20100907-

So I have tried a second stab at Linda.  Some of the things are better, it certainly looks more like Linda, however something is still not right.   This gives me something more to work at.  This painting is progress, the application of lessons learnt from the previous attempt and new skills acquired.   There are many mistakes to correct and learn from.

Progress is good but it is darn hard work – which brings its own rewards.

So now the election begins

It is decision time for the Labour party – just who do they want for their new leader. It probably will be major or minor Milliband and I haven’t got a clue, or a vote, as to who it will be. However, I do find it rather rich of newspapers to criticise the Labour party for not working out why they lost the last election. It is only 3 months and most of the party are still in denial, thinking that the coalition will collapse and they will be quickly ushered back into power. This doesn’t seem likely and so it will take Labour time to work out what they stand for. Perhaps it is for a more socialist future, perhaps more social democratic – I don’t think anyone knows. The only thing is certain is that it will take time and fortunately that is what Labour has.

So let labour elect their new leader. Don’t expect anything new from the party over the next 18 months and only then judge them. This will probably be the real low point for the coalition when despair will have truly taken over the Lib Dems. The we will see how many real Lib Dem supporters will defect to Labour. However, the coalition could be the making of the Lib Dems and if this is the case then all of the previous 18 months will be for nothing because Labour could facing another generation out of power. If this is the case then we will see real blood – SDP anyone?

And I have not forgotten I am a photographer as well.

20100904-_rock_outcrop_-_warre

With all this messing about with drawing and painting it is hard, sometimes, to remember that I am photographer at heart.  With this in mind I have produced the first of series of images that tries to address the concept of Deep Time.  The plan is simple – spend the next 6 months trying capture the essence of the Charnwood forest geology, almost 600 millions old.   The rocks are volcanic formed in some ancient volcanic chain and then weathered by the passage of time.  Yet they endure all that is thrown at them.  You could almost describe the experience of standing next to them as organic if that wasn’t such a contradiction in terms.

Another step forward

Linda

It is amazing how the mind works.  Just how does it rewire itself so that new visions and possibilities start to become clear?  I have no idea but I do know where these thoughts are coming from – I have been listening to Dune and it’s subsequent books and they are full of such thoughts.  Again another  crashing of ideas melted in the mind.

The reason why I mention this is because I was listening to this whilst I was producing this, well I still haven’t come up with name that satisfies so I will call it, for now, a painting.   Her name is Linda and I think it is a huge leap forward to the last such painting I made using photoshop, just over two weeks ago.   This painting business can be really exciting and frustrating at the same time but for me it is something new and vital.  Lets hope it keeps this excitement.

When less is more

Another lesson learnt. I was looking through a book on sketching this morning and picked up another tip or is that technique? I don’t think it matters. Anyway, the tip was that an eraser is more than remover of errors. When used correctly it can be a really constructive tool. This is something I have been looking for in brushes. To date I have been having difficulty with applying shades. They always looked too harsh. It was the same with drawn lines – I just couldn’t make them smooth enough. Now I have started to understand that this can be over come by the use of the eraser function. This is the first attempt at applying this knowledge. I guess this another step forward.

Working hard at getting better

It has been hard work day today. I know this depends on your definition of ‘hard work’ but I have worked hard. I was up at the crack of dawn slaving over the iPad trying to improve my technique. I think I have shown signs of improvement but there is a long way to go. Then it was out into Charnwood forest working on a photographic project I have in the back of my minds called Deep Time. I selected a really interesting are to capture and then, well I made some drawings or sketches which ever you want to call them. I have had an idea of trying to combine a photograph with a preparatory sketch – hardly original I know – but it seemed to be a good idea at the time. We’ll see whether time agrees with this. So now to go and work on the photographs I captured this morning – it really is interesting combining drawing with photography – the combination slows me down and gives me time to really look at a shot and consider exactly what I want to do with it.
