FU or not FU…that is the question

My life style from time to time allows me to spend a whole day watching something that I really like. So I found myself on a bank (public) holiday evening sitting down to watch the US version of House of Cards starring Kevin Spacey.

At the outset I think it is important to state that I loved the original House of Cards, the two subsequent series less so – Ian Richardson and Diane Fletcher were brilliant as Sir Francis and Lady Urquhart or should that be Macbeth and Lady Macbeth? The series cracked on at a brilliant pace with Urquhart becoming more and more villainous as the series developed. It also helped that the career advancement is much simpler in the British political system compared to the separation of powers of the American system.

So what do I think of the new FU? Well Spacey is brilliant. Every action he takes every syllable he utters, every mannerism is perfect. For me the series really works when he is in full Richard Duke of Gloucester mode, giving little asides to the audience. The problem, for me, with the series lies elsewhere. The original House of Cards was only 4 episodes where as the new one is 13 and this means that a lot of new plot had to be developed, plot that for me didn’t really work.

An example of this would be the new Mrs FU. In the original series she was a wonderfully manipulative presences in the background, never quite showing her hand yet was clearly the driving force that supported her husbands vicious ambition. The new Mrs FU is a much more of a mixed bag. One moment she is original Mrs FU the next she is a bleeding heart liberal who cares about fresh water in the third world or giving money to the homeless. The original Mrs FU would have had the police drive the poor away from her office entrance and would be that concerned as to how they did it.

The same could be said of the Mattie Storin character from the original series who’s vulnerability allied with her ambition make her the perfect foil to FU. One moment she is a woman trying to make it in a man’s world next she wants to call FU daddy. In the new series she becomes two characters, both feisty independent women who are out to get to the truth and are not to concerned as to what they have to do to get the information they need.

The political manoeuvring that FU had to do didn’t seem to be that vicious either. The biggest indictment against the new FU was that he was able to get a congressman off some drink driving offences which I would suspect is not that unusual in Washington DC – even if it did mean overstepping the line when it comes to supporting a police commissioner’s attempts to become mayor of DC . The charge sheet against the original FU was a lot more sordid from Blackmail, whoring , insider trading and of course 2 murders.

I guess that was the problem for me of the new House of Cards. It took a long time to achieve not a great deal. Yes, the American system wasn’t as straight forward to manipulate as the British but that would be no problem for someone like FU. In short I felt it was 6 episodes squeezed into 13 which is a shame because Kevin Spacey was just so good.

Will I watch the next series – of course it just that this doesn’t have the venomous naked ambition of the original but then again I suspect British politics is a much more of a bear pit than the Washington version which I suspect is a lot more reverential to the people who hold power, or at least the offices they hold.

Not going in the correct direction

Well having thought about I’ve decided that the painting is going in the wrong direction. Now if this were an analogue painting then I would work on it a lot more, I suppose the same would be the case with digital painting made in Photoshop. However, somehow this doesn’t seem to apply to Brushes on the iPad in my addled mind so I think I may well walk away. So expect more work on this painting!

Time for Reflection

I’ve now worked on this for around threes hours over two days and I think I now need to reflect on the way that the painting is progressing. Cup of coffee might help.

Phd

It has been a roller coaster for the last 24 hours. My son had his Viva, an interview where he has to explain why three years of work/research he had undertaken should be worth awarding a Phd, yesterday and every one was on tenterhooks as to what the outcome would be. Well just before 6pm yesterday we found out – he passed and once he has made a few minor corrections to his thesis he will be able to wear a floppy hat rather than a mortar board at any formal function he should attend in future (Ha Ha).

Needless to say my wife and I were ecstatic but also made me think about the last three years and the hard road it is to being awarded your doctorate. A good friend of mine who is an emeritus Professor described the journey a Phd researcher goes through as similar to travelling the a forest. You start off knowing exactly where you’re going but once inside you seem to loose your bearings and cannot ever imagine you’ll ever get out. Then slowly you start to see the other side of forest and you realise that you’ve been on the right journey all along, even though during the bad times in the middle of the forest you’ve been wondering around aimlessly. So it has been with my son. There have been some really tough times in the middle of the research when nothing seemed to make sense and self doubt would creep in. However, suddenly everything started to come together then there is heart ache and frustration of writing a 40k word thesis. Apparently humanities Phd theses are longer but science and technology thesis can be packed with hard facts, data and charts.

So should any parent of a child who is researching their chosen Phd subject should ever read this, of the child for that matter, let me give you a word of advice. It is going to be hard, it is meant to be or anyone could do it, there are going to be many dark days but in the end it really is worth it – honest.

Half Hour Clara

After the decision time for reflection. So I no longer have a presence on Flickr and in truth it has come as a bit of a shock to the system. I was getting somewhat tired of the whole process yet at the same time there are some incredible artists exhibiting their work on Flickr – there work will surely be missed by me.

So why half hour Clara? Well I am in the process of going to bed and I just felt like doing something just a little silly and yet also creative. This weeks Radio Times was lying around the house with the face of Jenna-Louise Coleman splashed across it. I suddenly had to make a drawing of her and Brushes on the iPad seemed the ideal place to go. Well it is half an hour after I started and so I decided to finish what I’ve done. It has helped get a lot of stress out of my system.

Seems I’m a bit of a pornographer

WARNING:  This blog contains images that some people might find offensive.  If you are one of these people then do not look any further….you have been warned.

It seems that me and Larry Flynt are the same.  We pedel pornographic images.  I guess that Mr Flynt does it deliberately and makes an awful lot of money from it.   Me, well I’m just some unfortunate fool who assumed that people can tell the difference between art and smut (There is a whole Phd theses there and no doubt have already been published just on this subject).  This is over blown but it is the way I feel.

At the beginning of this year I started making digital painting’s of the female form, sorry body.   Now looking back some of these works were more successful than others but I felt I need to share this with world.   I had also posted the result of my life drawing classes which again were of variable quality but were all nude forms both male and female.

You could argue whether that was a wise thing to do given the variable nature of the results but I couldn’t see there was anything wrong as they were clearly digital paintings or photographs of drawings and painting I had made of the female and male form rather than pictures of nude men and women or in anyway pornographic.

Today I found out that I was wrong.  The Flickr “Abuse & Advocacy team” have written to me to tell me that in fact I was  publishing items in the wrong categories, it seems that pictures containing Full Frontal nudity should be categorised as  Restricted where as bare breasts and bottoms should be categorised as Moderate.  Now I have to admit I didn’t even know that there was any such restrictions on  Flickr uploads.  However, it does raise some interesting questions and I will try and touch on these with reference to some of the images that clearly have caused offence to someone – you only get these warnings because…’ If you don’t apply filters correctly, there’s a very good chance another member will let us know – in fact that’s why we’ve taken action today….’   If that person or persons happens to read this blog then let me say I am sorry if I have caused you offence – it was never my intention.

Anyway the images…I do hope you have a strong stomach

David - Day 4 - 1

As you can see this is a painting of one of the most famous sculptures ever made – Michelangelo’s David.   Clearly given full frontal nature of the sculpture then this should have been classified as Restricted.   Now you can discuss the  relevant strengths and weaknesses of the painting but should we really have to Restrict a painting of one of the most famous sculptures because it is a full frontal nude?  Clearly the answer is Yes.

Nude Woman Kneeling

I guess this is a little trickier…bare breasts are visible but the bottom is not so is this Moderate or should it classified as Restricted content  after all …”A good rule of thumb is, bare breasts and bottoms are “moderate.”  But she is nude, albeit not full frontal so should this be Restricted or Moderate or what?  Or perhaps it is just an artistic painting and so not have any restrictions placed on it.  Clearly not.

Nude Woman

This image is somewhat more difficult.  I must admit I wasn’t happy with the way it was turning out so decided to pixellate the full frontal nude in the mirror.  Clearly the bottom is visible – so should be moderate – yet pixellated body?  If I had have known about the image categorisation policy I guess I would have chosen Moderate.  Do abstract paintings of a nude woman count as Restricted?

Photo 30-11-2012 09 43 25

Again this should be a moderate as the breasts and bottom is visible.  Lets forget that it is actually a painting celebrating the beauty of pregnancy.  Again we can argue about the over the quality of the work but …

Nude No 2 - It 4 - small

Another attempt at painting the female form which of course must be Restricted as it mets the criteria.  However, what is wrong with seeing the female form like this anymore than seeing the painting of David?  Neither of them are in anyway pornographic yet they have to be hidden away.

I guess this is what I find more worrying.  Not that Flickr has a filter policy but rather that they seem to be incapable of differentiate between an attempt at artistic expression and images produced for pornographic purposes.  I can detect a lawyer’s hand at work here.  Rather than trying to do so and getting it wrong, thus opening the company up to all sorts of legal challenge much better take the low risk approach – if in doubt Restrict.

Perhaps we should not look at nude paintings at all, if this were the case then the world’s great art galleries would be very empty.  The question is are any of the images likely to  deprave or corrupt anyone?  I would argue not but clearly I am wrong.

I am not angry about what Flickr has done and  I understand what they are trying to achieve it is just that the blanket approach is a form of censorship which really makes us all the losers. Not because we cannot enjoy my digital paintings or other art works but because it is a slippery slope and if we are not careful it can lead to some very strange places.  Places that I suspect most people would not wish to visit.

One final thing.  Take a look at these images

Sparrowhawk

Herring Gull eating a Kittiwake Chick - Farne island

Both images show one animal killing another.  Both are very graphic but yet are  depictions of the true nature of life for most of the creatures on this planet – brutal, short and ending in their consumption by an another animal higher up the food chain.   Some may well find these images disturbing yet both have been on Flickr for a while now without any comment or complaint.  It could be argued that brutality and violence is being tolerated whilst artistic attempts are not.  It is very difficult not to see things that way.

So what should I do?  After thinking about this for a while I’ve decided to close down my Flickr account, in part because of this but also because I feel it has out lived its usefulness.   However, it is a sad day.

Is this the most stupid thing I’ve seen in a while?

I’m sure the author means well and it may well be me but isn’t this a pick pockets paradise present?
