This is the end

Well I did the full multiplex this afternoon, watched a movie whilst consuming a hot dog, confectioneries and soda and boy am I regretting it now! However, I guess the other people who I shared the cinema wouldn’t have seen this as a problem as I probably raised the average age by around 20 years!

Still as for the movie, This is the End, if you like Seth Rogan movies then this is one for you. The story is almost irrelevant but Seth and his friends are trapped in a house when the Apocalypse takes place. There are some nice touches, especially liked the Exorcist homage, but overall it was a Seth Rogan movie so you know exactly what you get – hardly Shakespeare or F. Scott Fitzgerald but in the end I came out with a smile on my face other than wondering who the band was at the end? I guess the young kids around my knew in a heart beat. Oh the joys of getting old.

Is this Channing Tatum’s finest performance? Oh and I’ve just looked it up on the IMDB and the Boy Band is Back Street Boys…however they are (Ha Ha)

Sit back, relax and enjoy the ride

It is a while now since I’ve just sat down and did a bit of harmless sketching from something I’ve seen on the tele and I really enjoyed this. Over the past few days I’ve been doing a lot of writing which I really don’t enjoy and if the truth be known I probably won’t finish because it seems to be consuming most of creative RAM. I keep forgetting that I don’t have to do any of these things if I don’t want to and that life is about enjoyment,

After nearly 35 years dealing with the unseemly side of life you really just need to sit back, relax and, well, enjoy the ride.

Red sports car

For reasons I won’t go into I have the use of a rather fast, Red, BMW Sports saloon this weekend. So where to go to in this fire-breather? What exotic location should we choose? I know we’ll go to Flag Fen to look at pieces of wood found below metres of silt at Peterborough – what could be more exotic than that?!

Rainy day in June

Don’t you just love the English summer? Well yes I do … without the drizzle we wouldn’t have such a verdant country. The odd bit of blue sky wouldn’t go a miss though.

All things bright and beautiful

Now I don’t know what is like to wonder around gardens in other countries but, for me, there is nothing quite like walking through an english garden on a sunny morning – especially when the garden is your own! My wife hates me for saying this but the truth is that she is the driving force behind the garden and so only true contribution is to appreciate all her hard work.

It might not be a huge National Trust garden but it is ours and I think we are very proud of it.

Mick Aston RIP

You know you’re starting to get old when people you’ve grown up with are starting to die. I, like many an amateur and professional archaeologist, learnt so much from Mick Aston’s brain child Time Team. Mick Aston thank you and Rest In Peace.

Ashmolean, Oxford

Just got back from visiting my favourite all round museum the Ashmolean at Oxford. The reason for the visit was to visit the Master Drawings exhibition and I would really recommend this if you like portrait drawings. Now I’m going to say something that I find somewhat difficult to say…as a result of visiting this exhibition I feel sorry David Hockney. I know I know what as he got to feel sorry about well the final drawing in the exhibition was a Hockney from 1973 and compared to the greats in the rest of the exhibition it really looked ordinary. Perhaps it is too early to judge but maybe that is how the rest of Hockney’s work will be judge but posterity.

To be far to Hockney he was up against a virtual who’s who of western art from Michelangelo, Raphael and de Vinci to Valentin Serov, an artist I’d not heard of before but clearly some who can draw and paint. However, the artist that stole the show for me was Rembrandt, what a surprise! He produced a little drawing of his ageing father that was so perfect you believed that it was a sculpture rather than a small sketch.

After all this excitement what better way to pass an hour or so that to sit down with the classic sculptures and produce you own art work. However, there was only one problem, people kept looking over my shoulder and after a while this got too much. Now I wouldn’t claim my work came anywhere near the standard of the exhibition but I enjoyed myself which is the main thing.
