Decisions Made

Cate Blanchett 03

When I set out to create a digital painting of the character Galadriel I wanted to make it a ultra realistic painting of a photo that I had found.   I doubt I would have published the final version for copyright reasons but the steps towards it would have probably been fine as they were transformative in nature.  However, as I went along I realised the pointless of this for two reasons – the first is straightforward – why just make a copy?   If I wanted to do that then I could just have used the clone tool and been done with it.  Also it some how seemed cheating.  The second reason was that I as I worked on the painting I came to realise that the original wasn’t quite how I would have wanted the final image to look.

So armed with these reflections on my original goal  I am looking at making a more ephemeral painting – whether I succeed only time will tell.

Appreciating Talent

Cate Blanchett 02

Every now and then I realise just how exceptionally talented other artists are.  Now before anyone thinks I’m comparing myself to some of the greats of western art I’m not.   So I’m working on the Galadriel digital painting and the costume is incredibly intricate and I really am debating whether to replicate such detail – as I’m mulling this over my mind wonders to the work of Hans Holbein the younger and Jan Van Eyck.   Of course it is probable that neither man actually painted all the details but someone did and whom ever that was they were incredible crafts man. (I’ve just reread this and there are far too many adjectives but I don’t care.)

Ink

Well we survived the storm of the decade…actually we weren’t effected at all as the storm probably passed to the south of us.  It is always funny watching all the wet news reporters trying to hide their disappointment that, whilst pretty rough last night in some parts of the country, no one was seriously injured.   At the time of writing only one person appears to have died and that was before the storm hit.   So lets all be thankful for that things weren’t much worse.

Lou Reed No 1

Yesterday we did loose someone – Lou Reed which for people of my generation is big news.   In memory of this I have decided to make a series of drawings/paintings in graphite and ink.  Here is the first stab.

Another experiment with ink.

Another Hare

I bought myself some ink the other day and have started to understand how to use it.   The first lesson I’ve learn is that I really do need some nibs – I know that appears self evident but I thought I could get away with using a brush.  From my limited experience this appears to have been a mistake.

Hare

I’m still working on the my Hare theme at the moment and this was little more than an experiment on the use of ink – which probably explains why it looks more like a rabbit than a hare.
