Windturbine Thing

I know I’m on a bit of a wind turbine thing at the moment but this video give you some idea the scale of these things.

Just how do you make something interesting?

Windfarm

I have no answer to this question when it comes to wind turbines.  They have a stark beauty that we are not supposed to admire but I’ll let you into a guilty secret – I do.  There I’ve said it – I like wind turbines – but only the really big ones which I feel are proportionally are the most pleasing.  I’m sure if I lived next to them I might have a different view but actually I don’t think I would.

Where I live I am surrounded by wind turbines – not on the scale of the southern Scottish hills on the way into Glasgow but within a 15 Km radius of me there must be 10 or 12 turbines – any many of these are the really big ones – which leads me to the Four Horseman of Apocalypse at Gilmorton – my name for the giants that seem to straddle the hills just to the south of me.   They seem to dominate the whole of the south of the county slowly winding their lives away yet when you are close to them you loose all sense of their scale.  So just how do you make an image of such things?

The two examples here I think demonstrates the point.  The images I made this morning out at Gilmorton where captured in very flat and unsympathetic light.  Compare this to the image I captured one VERY cold late autumn evening on Redcar beach.   The light was crisp and a live and some how the monsters don’t seem that bad.  It also helps that the beasts are about a mile out to see but this again shows one of the big problems with all this – is a sense of scale really important.  Oh I just don’t know.

So the point of all this is?  I guess I just have to work the problem until I come with some form of a solution – that is assuming that there is a solution and it is not a kobayashi maru.

At the start of the year I had an idea – I would run a project for the 12 months following my birthday.  I had no idea what the project would be about but it would run for 12 months.  After a couple of months of scratching my head and realising this whole idea was a lot more complicated than I thought I settled on a very simple approach.   For the next 12 months I would produce at least one digital image on each of the days of the 12 months.  By the end of it I should have at least 365 images.  I have no idea where the project will take me and I guess if nothing else it will document, in some strange way, 12 months of my life for posterity.   Lets just see how many images I do produce and how many days I miss.

So here are the images I have created on day one – each one produced with my iPhone and a combination of photo apps.

Let the Games Begin.

Power appears to be back on

Yippee

For the past half hour or do I’ve been working on this sketch of two men wrestling. I’ve taken it as far as I can without redrawing the whole thing.

Power Cut…Again

Easter comes and Easter goes but it seems that another power cut makes things just a little more frustrating. I know this is a bit rich but power cuts are really annoying. We have been having problems over the past 9 months when we have suffered 5 cuts. Today things went off just around 9am and they still haven’t sorted the problem. I have spoken to the power distribution company and their engineers on the ground and the problem is they just don’t know where the problem is located. The best they can say at the moment is that it somewhere under the road near to my house – however, they can’t tell more until it goes again. So today we have had intermittent power all morning and as I write this the power is off again but thanks to the iPad and local wifi hot spots I am able to keep in contact with the outside world.

My friends laugh at me when I say that Internet access is as important now as electricity but it is. I have now been using the WWW since Windows 95 was launched – almost 20 years no – and so my life revolves around what is and what is not happening on the Internet. That seems very say but it really isn’t and allows me to have a much richer life.

Let’s hope that the problem is resolved once and for all today – I’m not holding my breath and that the battery on my iPad lasts – currently it is at 85%. One thing I can still do in the daylight is draw and paint and thankfully as the days are longer the light will last much longer.
