For lots of reasons day 10 didn’t exist.  However day 11 saw me back to my old tricks – an early start and on the road to get the good light .  This morning I was on the Cotswolds visiting the ancient stone monument called The Rollright Stones and boy was it cold!

For the one or two people who have been following my output over the years you will know that I have a number of projects bubbling away  and the Rollright stones is a strange meting point for them all.   Not only are the images part of Project LV One, they also are part of the Deep Time project – the stone used is the local Jurassic oolithic limestone – around 200 millions old as well as their construction being between 4000 and 5000 years old – deep time for human consciousness.  The final part of this nexus is that they sit next to a salt way – which has consumed so much of my time over the past few years.

On a more boring point the photography today again demonstrated the marginal quality of the iPhone 5S when compared to camera roughly the same price – the Canon G1x.  Now the Canon is no saint but the image it produces are superb, it’s just that you some times have to struggle to get the bloody thing to work the way you want it to or is it me?   Anyway, I knew that when I bought the thing so it is an interesting challenge.

So back to the iPhone 5s.   The image quality starts to collapse rapidly if you don’t have really good lighting conditions.  One of the way you can get around this is by using Photo app – my favourite is KitCam and this enables the user to constructively capitalise on the iPhone’s limitations – I have made some really great images this way.  It is the same with Pano function –  use it in excellent lighting condition and don’t push it and the results are superb – however it is too easy to go beyond the quality threshold and when this happens the image gets very mush very quickly.   I suspect I’m being too critical as most users will never view the images beyond either their iPhone or Facebook which are too small to really show the faults of the image quality.

So what is the purpose of this bitch about the iPhone?   We are starting to enter the twilight zone of Macboy fandom when, to quote a very popular movie, ‘…everything is awesome…’ and don’t you dare say it isn’t.  The WWDC is just around the corner when we have a series of much anticipated product launches – the speculation meter is already at 11.   I love my iPhone and it is my camera of choice but it isn’t up to much when you compare it to a real camera.

Project LV One – Day 9

Caitlin and Woman

Well it only took me just over a week to not post a daily update but the truth is I’m going through a bit of a crises.  I started my latest art class and whilst it a while since undertook a longish course I feel I’m starting to get a bit stale.  I guess I need to clarify that – I feel I’ve taken life drawing as far as I can at this level.  The question is do I want to take things to the next level at all?   Or do I examine the digital realm further where I can produce images that I find rewarding?  I don’t know the answer to that one but I what I am asking is where is all this leading me?

I have never had any pretensions to becoming a  professional artist nor have I ever looked for any inner meaning in what I make – it is what it is and that is its own reward. What I want to do is produce things that I enjoy on an intrinsic level.   I have explored painting in the real world and this has left me flat – I guess in part when I compare the results to my digital paintings they look so much better – in my eyes at least.

What I really enjoy is drawing and sketch book work.  The thought of a long term project in the real world leaves my somewhat dead.  So do I retreat into the world that has given my so much fulfilment or do I stick at something I don’t find that rewarding in the hope that the more I work at something the more I’ll get to love it?   I don’t the answer and hence the crisis.  Only time will tell the answer to this confusion.

Never Forget. An Ending.

Project LV One – Day 8

Elephant and Caitlin

These sketches were made at the opposite ends of the day.  The elephant around 6 AM and the portrait about 10 minutes ago.  There is no other link between the two.

Every steps takes you nearer…nearer to her

Project LV One – Day 7

Billy and Caitin

These are two drawings I made of faces I saw in the papers over the past couple of days.  They are not meant to be real likenesses so I’m not going to name them.  However what I was trying to do was capture more of what I see when I see these individuals.   After the drawings were complete they then went through post production on the iPhone and this is the result.

This means nothing to me.

Will he won’t he – NO HE WON’T

Well now we know – Nigel Farage will not stand at the Newark by election. Given the way that the national media handle everything UKIP at the moment this will be trawled through for any sign of great potent. It is not. UKIP survive where there is doubt and where hard and fast rules do not apply – welcome to the bonkers world of the European Parliamentary elections. In a by election for Westminster you have to start to stand for things other than broad strokes. So does the candidate support this hospital or that post office? These are the sort of questions likely to be thrown at you rather than broad issues where you can throw up huge smoke screens and offer very little in the way of an answer.

There was always the question of the size of the Conservative majority that didn’t seem right either. How could UKIP turn around a 16,000 majority in just a few weeks even with the buzz going on around them at the moment? It seemed a tall order. Let us not forget that Farage refused to stand in a much more winnable by election at Eastleigh a year or so ago when he was fighting the much weaker Liberal Democrats with a much smaller majority. Might this suggest a pattern? I suspect it does but only time will tell on that question.

As for the European Elections next month I just get the feeling that things might not go the UKIP way as much as we are lead to believe. At the moment every media outlet is screaming out UKIP in its coverage of the election but there seems to be little real evidence upon which this is based. We see poll after poll but are these that reliable when it comes to the Euro elections? I’m sure the experts on these matters would defend what the polls are saying but I just wonder is this a really cunning plan by the Conservatives? It is one of the oldest tricks in the political book – making things look far worse than they are and then when you do better than expected you can present this as a triumph of sorts – sounds familiar?

Now of course this has one huge flaw – it assumes that the Conservatives are that cunning and capable of delivering such a plan and there are great doubts about that. Nonetheless I just get this feeling that we are about to see the UKIP bubble start to slowly subside. This doesn’t mean that they will not be a problem for the Westminster parties – far from it. Nor does it mean that if the Conservatives fail to win a majority next year at the General Election then there won’t be an almighty split on the right as we finally start to get a realignment of the political world – remember the old political parties are dying both metaphorically and actually – members are getting older by the day and are not being replaced by the young – so sooner or later something is going to have to give and I suspect that process will start after the next election. Also remember that we might be facing the disentangling of the UK after the next elections if Scotland votes Yes and I wouldn’t like to be a Scot trying to make a reasoned argument about what is fair in such an atmosphere. Things could get very nasty indeed.

It just means that the heady excitement and froth that is going around at the moment for UKIP and Farage – can you name any other UKIP politician? – will seem rather silly by summer time. Nigel Farage – headlines today chip paper tomorrow. Too simple I know but we have been here before – SDP anyone?

A Bit of House Keeping

20130422-IMG_000333 photo 20130421-IMG_000326 20130501-IMG_000438 20130501-IMG_000445

It is a spring cleaning day and it  has been revelatory.  I cleared a lot of images out of my KitCam Cache I discovered images that I felt needed to have some work on before they were uploaded to storage.   You see I have a process that I follow whereby I capture an image, work on it and then uploaded it.  Only some times I don’t do this, move on and I forget where I have got to.  Suddenly I can’t upgrade the OS  because I have no disk space, sorry flash memory,  left – hence the spring clean.

I also discovered photo apps that I had completely forgotten about.  Over the past few weeks I have discovered  that if I post produce images by combine photo apps I can make some interesting images – this what happened this morning when I discovered I had the LensLight app.  I really hadn’t got a clue what this app did and was just about to uninstall it when I thought I might just have a look – the result was Disco Nude.

I guess the morale of this tail is – try and keep on top of your house keeping – yeah right like that is going to happen!

Me and my Imagination.

Project LV One – Day 6

20140302-Photo 02-03-2014 14 48 41

This whole project seemed like the point of least resistance – what could be easier than to produce just one image each day.  Well I’ve been trying to do that for just under a week and it is proving much more difficult than I thought.  Still nothing good comes from something that is too easy.

Project LV One – Day 4

IMG_001396

It was a hard and at times quite warm day in the studio today – often it seemed that the model had the best idea – lying back and going to sleep.   The whole day was surprisingly successful and the work I produced seemed to go down quite well with my fellow students at the  quick discussion and crit session.  Now I hate my work on the day and only come to like what I have produced after time has dulled my memory of struggles I went through.  So when it came to my turn to explain what I had done I was generally low key – much to the consternation of my fellow students who were far more upbeat than me about what I had produced – which was quite rewarding.

So this is my Day four image.
