Project LV One – Day 157 – The Point of No return

SP 028

It has been my experience that a point is reached with any painting that the internal contradictions are so great that you either say enough is enough or you scrap the whole thing and start again.  I feel I have reached that point with this painting.  It has been a very hard struggle to get here but boy has the journey been worth it.

The purpose of the painting was two fold;  Firstly, to try and make something approaching a likeness of the model I used – I’ve achieved that within reason – there are always things I would improve but that will come in the next painting – hopefully;  Secondly, to learn what it is like to take my time over a painting and really work the process, to learn lessons about the craft of painting.  Boy have a I learnt a great deal.  And the final bonus is that the photograph doesn’t do the painting any favours which is almost a back hand complement or perhaps I’m a crap photographer – not really the case.

This has taken almost two weeks on and off and it has been exhausting.  I need to recharge my batteries and do something completely different – I know I’ll go to Germany.

Project LV One – Day 156 – Hair…another step towards the 10,000 hours

SP 025 - Hair

Good old Malcolm Gladwell – he really has set me on my way.  For those of you who don’t know Mr Gladwell was the author of Outliers: The story of success in which he puts forward the idea of you can only be considered a master in a subject if you have put in 10,000 hours of practice.  Well at least I think he does but as I have only got my general knowledge (should that be general ignorance I’m really not sure) and Wikipedia your guess is as good as mine.

At the moment I am reading a rather depressing history of Stalin written by an American academic – high on detail and accuracy low on fluidity and style – much the same as the high end of American journalism – well at least viewed from this side of the Atlantic where we are used to a more rip roaring approach which unfortunately lead to the hacking scandle so perhaps it is not that food after all.  To compare and contrast this heavy tome I am listening to the latest of Stephen Fry’s autobiography which really is the mirror image of the Stalin history – light on real detail other than the title tattle of every day life and written with Fry’s delightful style, both lucid and ludicrous at the same time.  Another gem.

Which brings me to hair.  Over the past few days I have been working on a painting of young friend of mine.  After some false starts, documented in this blog, I have slowly created a painting that is in some ways satisfactory, only some ways.  So now I have to address the vexed question of how to paint the hair with no real idea how to proceed even after studying how  great and not so great painters have approached the problem. One the reason for this is that they have had years of experience, 10,000 hours again, whilst I’m a neophyte struggling to find his own rhythm.  The only way forward is to sit down and get my hands dirty, both metaphorical and literally, after all I have many more hours to mark off before I reach 10,000.

Project LV One – Day 154 – Variations on what is ‘real’

SP 006 - Variations

yesterday I had an interesting conversation on what is real in art – specifically when does one art work morph into another.  This was brought about when we were discussing the validity of images made from old slides and neg’s of art works created years previously and are no longer in our possession.  Of course this is the type of conversations that can spark off when under taking a long car journey and in truth there really is no answer.

This image illustrates the discussion.  It is a digital image of a painting that no longer exists – I destroyed it the other day.  Yet whilst the  ‘real’ image no longer exists here is a digital image of the same which i have changed.  So does this make it a new image?  Actually having now thought about this whilst writing it down it really is a pointless, “how many angels on the head of a pin head?’ kind of question.  But a bit a pedent it is the short of question I love to think about.  I really need to get out more

I really want to rock with…

Project LV One – Day 152 – Fresher’s Week

Freshers Day - De Montfort University

It is that time of year…the freshers have arrived at one of our two local university – the DMU.  As I walked through these excited/anxious people of the future it brought back memories of my time at the DMU not too long ago.

Campus Centre - DMU - Leicester

These two are interesting bed fellows.  The image I made yesterday (the top image) was made with an iPhone using the Pano function.  The bottom image was made with a Canon G7 and a lot of work in photoshop.  Now it does have interesting effects within the image but over all the iPhone wins hands down.  Such has photography moved and I guess so has my photographic practice.

Project LV One – Day 151 – Tilt

SP 007

One of the reassuring things about not being the first in something is that you know many have been there before.  So it is with painting…I know that many painters before me have reached a point when they realise that what they have done is just wrong.  The internal contradictions become just too great, a correction here makes something else worse and so on until the whole thing collapse.  That has happened this morning.

However, as opposed to sculpture, where it is really difficult to stick the piece of stone back onto the face with painting there is always the option of painting over everything and starting again.  It is hardly the nuclear option but does mean that the lessons you learnt from the first attempt can be merged into the next mrs you are about to make.

I need to get out and purge my system.

Project LV One – Day 150 – Cry Havoc and let slip the dogs of war…

SP Combo 001

Once more unto the breath…

Enough of the Shakespeare …enough.  Anyway I am painting again and over these past few weeks the one thing I have learnt about how I paint is that I need to reflect on my next move.  It does feel like a battle to get things the way I want them to be and I have done little more than a quick sketch to get a feel where each component fits together.  There will be an enormous amount changes along the way and much cursing and swearing.   Such is the nature of the beast!

Project LV One – Day 149 – a little gentle drawing

Marion Cotillard

After all the excitement of the past day or so I thought it would be nice just to do a little drawing as a means to wind down or purge the system.
