Project LV One – Day 188 – Faces, Sharpie and Pierre Noir

Sharpie Girl

There are number of reasons why I have decided to make a series of portrait drawings which I’m still coming to terms with.  So here are the first in the series which I’m thinking of calling The Faces of Leicester.

Project LV One – Day 186 – Confused…

Quick Nude Sketch

So one day into the new Yosemite Sam upgrade little things are starting to annoy.  The first thing is that one of the little functions I used to use on Safari has disappeared.  I suspect that it is still there but in another place but did they move it?  Another annoyance is that the OS now assumes that when I put my SD card into the reader I want to import the images to Pictures and an annoying pop up window appears.  I don’t and it didn’t used to – again I am sure there is a simple fix but why not keep the settings I had from the previous installation.

None of these things will make me want to stop using my iMac it is just that they are annoying  – such as grit in your show – they don’t stop you doing what your were doing but make things just a little bit more distracting.  Such is the pedantry in my life!

PS – I have now found the missing Safari function but I had to go and look for the silly little thing.

Project LV One – Day 186 – Welcome to Yosemite Sam

Yosemite Sam

So I’ve gone and done – I’ve updated to Yosemite.  So far so good the only problem I’ve encountered was with the Blurb Book program but I just had to down load the Javascript update (not sure why this wasn’t included in the upgrade) and everything seems very much as normal.  The interface is very clean and clear and the icons appear to be so much brighter.

Talking of brighter I had a chance to have a look at the new iMacs today with the much vaunted Retina displays and I have to say I was underwhelmed.  Whilst the images did look very impressive I did notice that the computer I was using had a bit of a problem refreshing properly so there was a noticeable lag in the image becoming pin sharp.  It wasn’t off putting but it was clearly there which makes you wonder why that is?  The most obvious answer is the the video card/chip/support isn’t unto the task of supporting the high pixel count of the screen.  If this is the case then it really does undermine the whole point of having a super sharp screen.

Apart from this it was just another iMac – which is actually a compliment.

Project LV One – Day 185 – I really must be the pupil from Hell

Black Dude 02

I guess I am a real pain in my latest art class because I will not stick with the programme.  If it is any consolation to my latest tutor I never have been able so he is not alone.   This week we were being shown how to us a grid, in this case one in the shape of the Union flag, to make a copy of a photograph.  It was intended to introduce the use of charcoal and as an  exercise really quite interesting  but one I found frustrating as I wanted to do my own drawing of the profile of the person.

Black Dude 01

We had to plonk the head in the middle of the paper as the whole session was to be very prescriptive – which it had given the aim of the exercise.

We were then allowed to make our own image as a second image should we want to.  Actually we were given further prescriptive instructions but I had by that time had had enough and so went off and made my own drawing using red soft pastel as well as the charcoal and the resultant image was very much me – whether that is good or bad and that is in the eye of the viewer.

Overall all another successful day in class I think – whether me tutor feels that way is another matter but there we go – at least he only has one of me in the class as everyone else stick with the programme.  In a way that is the story of my life.

Project LV One Day 184 & 185 – Considering the Female Form

Mother Earth 007

I was going to write a long piece about the female form and it’s depiction in paintings but then as was writing it I didn’t know anything like enough about the subject to come to any formed conclusions on the subject – so it is a progress report painting and prep sketch for today.

Pregenant Sketch 01

The reason for the two days combined is that yesterday turned into a really shitty day and I didn’t feel up to keeping my blog/project unto date.  Strangely doing some painting this morning has helped to lift the mood so not so black dog any more.

Project LV One – Day 183 – End of another day with Mother Earth

Mother Earth 006

Anyone who doesn’t know anything about painting will find the statement that painting is exhausting somewhat incongerous if not totally self absorbent.  Whoever it is true – painting is exhausting  and I have reached the end of another day which has been unbelievably successful.  Let’s hope it stays that way.

Let me tell you a story about a sausage

If you ever wanted to know how the British Government works There is a wonderful series of comedy programmes made by the BBC called Yes Minister and Yes Prime Minister.  Whilst they were made in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s they are as relevant now as then. They follow the bumblings of Jim Hacker on his journey from government minister to Prime Minister.  He continually has to battle with a senior civil servant Sir Humphrey Appleby and this battle is all you need to know as to how the whole machine works.

The reason why I bring this up is because the way that Jim Hacker becomes Prime Minister on the back of a trumped up European story about renaming British sausages.  I thought about this again this morning when the papers were screaming about a £1.7 billion surcharge that Britain and other EU countries are going to have to pay to the EU itself.  The details are irrelevant what isn’t is that this give David Cameron the chance to do battle with Europe and get this mythical £1.7 billion back for the British people.  In one stroke the great leader saves each citizen about £200 and we should all bow down to his greatness.  To make this even more of a pantomime story the money has to be paid by December or else which seems hardly likely .  To make the story even more unbelievable no one in Government had any idea this was going to happen until yesterday.

Of course there might be another reason why this has come about.  The EU are so insensitive to political needs of Cameron that they want to rock the boat and so how is boss when it comes to any renegotiations – after all Cameron did go out of his way to block the appointment of Mr Junker – this could be pay back for that.  However, if this were the case then we really are all screwed because some of the other countries that are supposed to pay up include Italy, heavenly in debt and the basket case to end all basket cases Greece how is still on life support.  Just to add insult to injury to Greece Germany would receive a £614 million rebate.   If this is how the EU is run then suddenly UKIP doesn’t have to say another word – the EU will force Britain out of the EU without a shot being fired.

If you are wondering the trumped sausage story ends with a typical distortion of the truth and Hacker becomes Prime Minister…I wonder if this is what might happen here?

Project LV One – Day 183 – Has it really been 6 months?

Mother Earth 004

They say a week is a long time in politics well for me the last 6 months seem to have been an eternity but here we are at the half way point of the Project LV One project.  To demonstrate how far I have travelled in the last six months here are three images I made back at the start of the process compared to the latest from the Mother Earth painting.  Actually look back at the reclining nude I painted I suddenly start to see some connection with what I am doing now.  Of course the model for that painting was more Rubens rather than mother earth.

Last night I decided to make mother earth pregnant after remaining the wonderful mother earth (?) deity figures made during the last iron age by people on the very edge of what was habitable in central and eastern Europe.  According to the text one thought about their use was that they may have been used to help the woman through birth, which is probably one of the most dangerous times in a woman’s life.  After reading this I had to make Mother Earth pregnant.

This whole process is pushing my painting ability to the edge of the envelope and I have to say I am surprised  how well it is going at the moment. However, if there is one lesson I can take from the last 6 months it is that  there is an awful long way to go so there is plenty of time for a mighty fall!

Project LV One – Day 182 – “Cry ‘Havoc!’, and let slip the dogs of war”

Mother Earth 001

So I have started the painting of my life! (Hyperbole accepted).  This is the first time I have worked on a large canvas (by my standards) and I’m enjoying the elbow room that this gives me.  This first phase is just about laying down tonal zones and general draughtsmanship (Please don’t laugh).  As I was painting another idea has come into my head and hopefully I will have the skills to make this idea come into fruition.

The fault is not… in our stars but in ourselves

Project LV One – Day 182 – A germ of an idea?

Sleeping Beauty Castle

Since completing the recent series of paintings I have been at a loss as to how and where to go forward with my art.  One thought that I explored was to try and develop some form of urban sketching practice. (Actually explore is over blowing things somewhat – no wait a over bowing things a lot – I made a few half hearted attempts at making something which never really left me with anything other than perfunctory sense of satisfaction.  They really aren’t me.)  This doesn’t mean that I won’t continue but rather I’m not motivated to make such images.

Blocks

Whilst urban landscapes or landscapes in general are fascinating the thing that motivates me to create art is the human form and portraiture , which I guess are really two side of the same coin.   For too many years I have been interested in prehistory and more recently the place that art took in the life of the prehistoric people.  ( I have to say I do not like the term ‘prehistoric’ because it suggests some form of inferiority on the part of the people who would be considered ‘prehistoric’.  This is nonsense.  The only difference between the prehistoric people and 21st century people is experience and time.  Apart from that we are the same people with the same capacities with one exception – we write things down and the prehistoric people didn’t – hence the name.  If you don’t believe me then just look how some people in the USA are reacting to the marginal threat posed by Ebola.  For all our learning and experience irrationality and fear rule our lives – now as then.)

So what are was produced in the pre classical world? (still not happy with this but it will do for now)  Well the best guess is that fertility was upper most on the minds.  A word of warning here as it may well be that the professional artists, and there does seem to be evidence that such people existed who solely created art and, for what ever reason, were supported by the rest of people, may have been men, so male predilections may have come to dominate the surviving art.  In short the earth goddess, who’s rounded form, was celebrated above anything else, which is in stark contrast to the stupid pursuit of the perfect female form nowadays which has nothing to do with how real women look like.  In fact the pre classical world’s view of women seems to be more mature than ours.   I am sure any anthologist who might read that last statement may not agree but I’m discussing how the creative precess works for me.

Another continuing theme has been the ‘Green Man‘.  This is an old tradition in Britain who’s antecedence may reach back into pre classical times.  The Green Man would appear to be some form of person who is part of or intertwined with the forest.  Whether he is some form of deity is unclear but he would appear to be supernatural.

Mother Earth

So how do these things intertwine?  Well I have an idea for a painting which the more I think about the more excited I get – a mother earth painting which celebrates the positives of life rather than the negative feelings generated by the Grey series.  The only problem I have is that I suspect the painting may well be beyond my current skill levels.  However, there is only one way to find out and that is to do it.

Wish me luck…I suspect there are many blog entries to come where I will be a gibbering wreak as my great plans fall about my – synch is life.
