Autumn Postscript No. 01

Title v01

So now comes the really difficult part of the project – editing the images so that fit into some  sense so that I can put them into a book.  Then all I’ve got to do is write the intro essay…no problems then!

Watching Rembrandt

Rembrandt sketch No 02 Rembrandt sketch

Whilst watching the excellent second Exhibition on Screen documentary about Rembrandt I found myself making a few ink sketches.  I know this is crazy but I deliberately avoided the exhibition myself as these mega shows tend to be  a huge bun fight with little or no chance to engage with the works themselves.  It is far better to wait and find the selected works for yourself when they are back at their institution.  A great example of this is the half hour or so I spent with the Rembrandt’s at the Scottish National Gallery almost on my own.  Of course I am fortunate enough to be able to do this but I think it is worth the effort – and money.

Far beyond the dead horizon

Elisabeth Frink Hog Lectern

AS I was sketching in the excellent Elisabeth Frink exhibition at the Lakeside Art Centre this morning a thought struck me – just how autobiographical is art?   The reason why I ask this question is that up until today I hadn’t realised that all of Frink’s sculptures were in some ways self portraits of the artist herself.  I am sure this is hardly revelatory as no doubt there is a PhD thesis gathering dust  somewhere that explores this exact point.  Still it is new to me which is one of the reasons why I go to exhibitions.

Anyone who has ever had to move complicated items will appreciate the short video put together by the gallery.   It was clearly a close run thing.

My oh my you sure know…

Man with Blue Background Movie Star Purple Cloth

Only a month to go and it will all be over for another year…only one month that is all and we will start the long ascent out of darkness.  Of course for the other half of the globe the opposite is true.  The worrying thing of course is that we will still have to endure another winter before the longer days really impact our lives.

Oh Ruby.

Paris – almost a week on….

Epstein - Rock Drill Red Hand Vernon Dursley

There are times I wish I knew more about poetry.  I see hear wonderfully educated people  quoting their favourite poem or poet and feel a small hint of jealousy.  However, poetry has passed me by which I suspect is a shame but we have to live with the cards that we have been dealt with (I know this is  predeterministic clap trap but there we go).

The gifts, such as they are, I have been given are to make visual images.  Whether the images are good or bad is a nonsense and the more I learn about the art world the more I realise this to be.  So I give you three sketches I’ve made over the past week, none of which were made with Paris in mind but I can’t help feeling that when viewed through that prism there is a certain connection between them all.  Perhaps I should sit in a dark room for a bit or start to read some poetry!

No One Knows Anything

Woman - Iteration No 002

This weekend has proven beyond any reasonable doubt that our so called opinion formers, whilst claiming access to a higher level of understanding, know just about as much as people walking the street.  On Saturday morning I posted an appeal to reject easy answers and this now seems to have been more prescient than most of my comments.   Again and again I have read the views of columnist  with nothing really to say about what happened in Paris other than to peddle their own well worn theories about what we should and should not have done in the past and what we should do in the future.  Surprisingly one of the more  lucid analysis of the world situation came in a letter to the Daily Mail:

Daily Mail

We have also seen the Paris attack as a means to show yet again that Jeremy Corbyn is unfit to be Prime Minister.  Now I am no Corbyn fan and don’t think that he would make a good Prime Minister but that is at least five years away when goodness only knows  what situation we will be facing. The one thing you can say about Corbyn is that he has been consistent in his views on these matters – which is more than can be said of most politicians.

The letter for me encapsulates everything I was trying to say on Saturday – there are no easy answers to Islamic extremism, whether it is the modern bete noire  ISIS or those golden oldies al-Qaeda (So last year) or whatever blanket name we are given next.  ISIS currently hold territory in the more deserted part of eastern Syria but are probably no bigger than al-Qaeda were in Afghanistan at the turn of the century.  Destroy ISIS and it will morph into something else until we wake up and realise that bombs and guns don’t provide an answer to something which is as complicated as the human condition.  However whatever the answer is it won’t be easy.
