Switch Tower
It has been a long day and I am not thinking straight but having spent the day at Tate Modern and especially the new Switch Tower extension with which, I have to say, I am underwhelmed. Of course it can be argued what do I know? And that would be a reasonable argument but to me it symbolises much of the problems this country is facing. It seems that no one thinks it is wrong to splash so much money on an already fabulously supported arts institution and get so little in return. Yet if you were to suggest that the same amount of funding should be spent supporting arts institutions around the country then the metropolitan arts establishment would be in uproar at their loss. Now I didn’t make it up to the viewing platform so it can’t give a fully rounded view, no pun intended, but when does a viewing platform make an art museum?
So what does the tower consist of? Well four floors of artwork that are, at best, ok. Four floors of office space, a floor for Tate members and the viewing platform. I believe the whole thing cost over £200 million, I might be wrong on that figure as I cannot confirm the cost anywhere online – too tired to really try very hard. Nothing about this tower makes any sense to me unless you think that London is the only place where ‘art’ should be seen and that it is the duty of the state to support such a notion. If, however, you believe that the Tate collection has been paid for by the whole of Britain and so it should have art galleries outside of London, I know it has got branches in Liverpool and St Ives but is that the best that can be done? How about a Tate/Yorkshire Sculpture park or a Tate/Baltic Exchange or Tate Scotland or Tate Wales or Tate Belfast? Now I am sure much of the Tate collection is shared with institutions around the country but do any of them see anything like the money spent on what I feel is an Oligarc’s tower? I suspect the answer is no.
One final thought. The Tate holds the Turner bequest for the nation and you would have thought that an ideal place for much of this to be displayed would be at the Turner Contemporary at Margate – you would be wrong. The art establishment wouldn’t allow it and so this fine building fails to achieve its aim of helping to regenerate a neglected corner of Britain. And the establishment wonders why the great unwashed outside of London rebelled against their advice in the referendum campaign. The rule seems to be spend money in London pay lip service to anywhere else. I doubt things will change anytime soon.
Note to myself – this sounds awfully kipperish but the contempt displayed by Tate and their tower would drive anyone towards the frothing purple brigade. I may well wake up in the morning and regret this but…
PS – around 24 hours after I wrote this rant.
I still feel angry by the waste of money – money that would have been better spent outside of London. In fact I think an even better approach would be to move the whole of the Tate institution away from London completely. They should be moved to some brownfield side in the north Midlands or South Yorkshire, perhaps Grimethorpe, which would be the centre of the nation as a whole. They could run Tate expresses from St Pancras as these old industrial areas would have excellent rail links. It won’t happen of course for the same reasons that were poked fun at 30 years ago in Yes Prime Minister even though this would go a long way to really regenerating whole areas of Britain that need the help. So much for the Northern Powerhouse, although I believe that has now been shelved for May’s? I am not sure but if her words meant anything, a huge if as big as the Switch Tower then a cost neutral scheme of moving out of over priced London to ‘cheap’ South Yorkshire. While we’re at it how about a few other moves:
- National Maritime Museum to Portsmouth:
- Imperial War Museum to Duxford:
- Science Museum to Manchester:
- National Theatre to leave the South Bank and became a touring troupe around the country. (Yes Prime Minister been here already and is just as illuminating)
I feel my purple rage starting up again and don’t even get me started on lack of any true local democracy.
It seems that sleeping on something doesn’t make me calm down…I just don’t believe it!
Purging the left side of my brain
Busy busy day trying to work out where exactly a medieval deer park may have been situated. Absorbing work but after a while it does get very tiring so as bit of light relief a quick sketch to try and balance my lobes.
Jive Talkin’
Another day in paradise…a bit soggy around the edges but compared to so many of my fellow citizens of the world paradise on earth – so why do I feel so apprehensive about the future? If you want a more sensible view on today’s wonderings through Charnwood check out my fellow traveller David’s blog. It always makes more sense than mine.

Spinning
I have to say that I am just a little bit obsessed by the Preacher series at the moment. Whether this is escapism from the real crapshot that life is becoming I am not sure but perhaps the most depressing thing about all this is this: I first became aware of Preacher probably 10 years ago when my son started reading the graphic novel – 10 YEARS! Where did those years go? The older you get the smaller proportion of your life 10 years becomes. When you are ten it is 100% of your life when you are chasing sixty then that is less than a fifth – time passes at the same time but the older you get it just became a smaller element – hence the sense that things are speeding up…whatever the reason 10 years ago seems only like yesterday.

What am I going to do now?
So what am I going to do now? Now that the Tour de France is over for another year – no Ned, no Carlton, no Sean, no Gary. What is to happen to me? Sure the New Year’s honours will include a K for Chris Froome – the road racer of his generation. Some how an OBE seems a bit of an insult.
Fantasia on a world gone mad
Exactly what type of world is it that three serious ‘terrorist’ incidents in Germany in just over a week almost becomes the norm? I don’t know but I that is where we are at the moment. It almost seems normal that someone who is totally unsuited for the role of President of the United States of America is now only one vote away from the job and the only person who can stop him is Hillary Clinton.
Yet we must try and lead as normal a life as possible otherwise the whole thing will become too much. I suspect we hope for the best but know that things may well get much worse. I have to admit that this is the worst things have felt for an awful long time – at least when the USSR was breathing down our neck we knew that if the cold war went hot we probably would have been cinders within a few days – now who knows what will be next.
On the home front the Leadbangers are now out on maneuvers seeing betrayal everywhere and making dark threats – I am not sure how how much credence to place on those as I suspect Theresa May could be a much tougher Prime Minister than David “call me Dave’ Cameron ever was. I know little about the inner workings of the Tory party other than they do like to win it seems to me that they have just chosen, anointed, someone who might just be that. If this is the case then the 25 Leadbangers may find they have to go an see matron and it won’t be the naughty step for them.

Transcendental
So summer is here and on the political front we can expect nothing much to happen – ha ha.
So I am not sure which of these drawings is more fitting.
Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one who gets burned.
Aladdin Insane?
So it seems we all now just have to accept everything that Brexit means without saying ‘hang on a minute…’ It is a month to the day since the vote and to be quite honest I haven’t got the first clue as to what Brexit means any more than I did when I voted to remain. Apparently though I am not supposed to ask such questions because the British people have voted and that is that. It matters not that none of the arguments behind Brexit makes any sense at all we are all Brexiters now. Iain Hislop summed up this point far better than I can:
Yesterday saw the first stirrings of what probably will become the psycho-drama to end all psycho-dramas when Edward Leigh MP, last seen looking dazed and confused with all the other Leadbanngers when the lady withdrew from the Tory leadership contest, stood up in Parliament and shot a warning across the bow of Theresa May who, quite wisely, ignored his question and answered a different one. Yet there was the seed of the rebellion even though the Brexiters had won, now they want to drive Britain further and further to the right and won’t accept any compromises along the way. Oh what it must be like to live in a land of ideological purity where you never have to give way on anything and everyone sees everything the way you do – suspect there are some on the Labour side who inhabit such a land as well. However in the land that everyone else lives in you have to cut deals and trim and tack your way to where you want to get to. The problem with Brexit no one has the first clue as to where that is. But of course that is my fault for pointing that out and I clearly have not accepted the will of the British people. I need to be re-educated
I will leave you with this thought. Yesterday I went to Hardwick hall in Derbyshire – a more quintessential English scene you could not wish to behold. Before leaving I used the facilities and as I was going into the new toilet block I noticed that the renovation was paid for, in part, by the EU. Now that we have voted to leave the EU where will the money come from to replace that funding? Certainly not from Boris et al’s magical mystery tour’s £350m. So what does Brexit mean again?

Crazy Crazy world
Sometimes we all wish we could stop the world and get off….I think we are approaching one of those times. An abortive coup in Turkey which exposed the security of one of the largest stockpiles of nuclear weapons in the region; shootings and deaths daily on the streets of the United States of America; Donald Trump; possible Italian bank collapse ;Brexit…I could go on but what is the point? The point of course is that whilst we in the west can worry about such matters for an awful lot of the human race such matters are very abstract to their lives when compared to starvation, thirst and death which is part of their real lives rather than an abstract macro concept happening somewhere else.
So when feeling in a crazy rich westerners funk what better way to get out of it than makes some sketches…you know what – it works.
