Cumbersome iPad

I maybe missing something but using the iPad for doing some, otherwise simple, things can be very infuriating. I have just tried to upload this painting to flickr. Nothing could be simpler – wrong! Now I must caution myself that I may well be missing something – but the iPad was suppose to be the best way to experience the Internet . So having tried to upload this direct to flickr from brushes I failed. So I then tried to upload using flickr – another failure because no flash. So I have resorted to my oldest method – emailing Posterous. So let’s see if this works. The great thing is that brushes is brilliant – just a shame the artist isn’t – but I don’t care about that.

There’s been a plucking MURDER.

Cordon the area off, get SOCO, CSI I want a SIO now! Murder most fowl has taken place. Actually what has happened is that the seed we put out every day is being converted into sparrow hawks as I write this. Now some people get really up set about sparrow hawks thinking they are cause for the decline of some birds. Well the is no doubt that sparrow hawks do prey on small birds, or in this case a wood pigeon. However that is nature for you and you cannot have one without the other. Anyway by far the biggest killer birds are cats and humans so perhaps we should just calm down.

iPhones and Giant Redwoods

So how do you capture a Giant Redwood with an iPhone?  Well I think I need to clarify one or two points.  The first is that this isn’t a giant redwood.  Yes it is a Sequoiadendron giganteum but really it is just a pre pubescent redwood – it is perhaps no more than 70 years old – a mere pup.   The second thing to clarify is that I am not in California but rather just outside Leicester, Leicestershire, England.

So there I am standing in front of this  small example of the redwood – perhaps only 30 metres tall. Nonetheless when you stand next to these creatures you start to realise that you are not such a significant creature after all.  Yes I will come and go and this tree will endure to who knows when?  So how do you capture the size with an iPhone?   Well the truth is I don’t know but I had a go.   The iPhone camera is, by any standards, a very poor digital camera and this is why I find it so interesting to use.  It free’s you from the manic straight jacket of Mega pixels, shutter speeds, lens and f stops.  You just press the button and hope for the best.   The challenge is to use these limitations to my advantage.   I am not sure I have mastered this creature yet but it really is fun trying.

Anyway, back to the Redwood.  There was no way I could capture this tree in one shot so I decided to make a collage  of a series of shots.  I suspect I will be coming back to the photo I made again and again – but this is the first stab at trying to make a photograph of this small but beautifully formed sequoia

A whole new ball game

I know this is a bit naff but it is my first attempt at drawing? On the iPad. David Hockney has suggested that this is one of the great things about the iPad. It probably is if you have a modicum of his talent. Me – well I am just messing about – however, I suspect the more you use this app the better you will get. The one thing that the app does give you (well me anyway) is a child like freedom just to mess about. You can draw using full blown applications on a computer but this is just pick up and fiddle around territory which is much more liberating.

The lack of flash is starting to get annoying!

I am writing this on my iPad which is actually quit easy to type on.  However, what is now starting to really annoy me is the lack of flash support on the iPad.  This is supposed to be the best way to experience the Web, and to a degree it is really good, but the lack of support for flash is spoiling all of this.

It is all very well talking up HTML 5 but very few people have developed sites for this and most still use flash, such as the seminar below.  Now I could go and watch this on my Pc, but I want watch this on my iPad and I can’t simply because Apple won’t let me.   This is one of the many reasons why I feel Apple is all controlling, and whilst they make some really great tools, such as the iPhone, their view of how the web should work is just wrong.

On the plus side though the iPad is working out well, apart from above!

write in haste, (and) repent at leisure – sort of…

Many years ago I was told to put something I have written in a draw for 24 hours and then go back and read it.  If I still felt that way then submit it.  Wise words and as usual totally ignored.  Oh the joys of the internet age!   So what has caused me to feel this way?   It’s the Times iPad app of course.   

Yesterday, out of frustration with the blasted thing I gave it a bit of a kicking.  24 hours later I am now starting to understand the thinking behind the app and it has some very positive points.   However, before I prostrate myself in front of the News Corp alter there are still a number of things wrong with this app.   The first is that it seems to have a strange effect on my iPad.   I went to download today’s edition whilst I made myself breakfast.  I came back to the iPad expecting to have a paper to read and found the iPad rebooting.  I have no idea why this was but it is not the first time that it has happened when the Time app has been running.

Now for the more positive feedback.   The first is that I have come to realise that I only read the commentary and opinions pages in a news paper.   This might a strange thing to say when discussing this app but it means that you treat the newspaper more as a magazine and then closed model being put forward by the Times is far more appealing.  

I have now figured out how the navigation works and this also make a lot more sense – It is just a pity there was no explanation/tutorial video to help out.  I have even found the adverts buried in the publication – however, if I was an advertiser I would be concerned as they would appear to be placed in such a away as to be avoided.

So is it worth it?   Well yes actually as this is a far more cost effective way of reading the paper than buying it and if I cut out the Sunday paper then the iPad will pay for itself in just over a year.  Hopefully, the app will be continually improved and it will then become the way papers should be seen in this Internet/24 hour news age – analysis and options rather than simple reporting.

One final thing.  I put a review on the iTunes site based on what I wrote yesterday.  Now I want to remove this as most of the points weren’t valid, however I can’t do this.  I have no idea why this might be.
