By posting this series it gives me chance to step back and reflect on the work and to assess where to go next. So far so good.

Trying a bit of Academic Drawing

A few weeks ago I picked up a wonderful catalogue of a 1991 exhibition called ‘The Artist’s Model ~ its role in British Art from Lely to Etty’. The book contains numerous prints of drawings made by artists of this period of the human form, either drawn from Life or The Antique. Now I don’t wish to become a classical painter but there is something about understanding the human form if you want to develop as a human figurative artist – which is what really interests me above all else.

So I have found a classical pose photograph and intend to try and reproduce a drawing similar to some of the greats of 18th and 19th century British art. Nothing like setting one self up to fail but if you don’t try you never progress. I suspect it will all end in tears!

Al Pacino as Lord Byron ~ After Irvin Penn

One of my all time favourite photographers is Irvin Penn – it is impossible for me to put in words the power of his imagery – so I decided to try and express my appreciation by attempting tp produce a similar work as a drawing – Al Pacino as Lord Byron. Well it didn’t start off as this but it just grew, as these things tend to, into a gothic drawing. Well that is how I see it anyway.

VISUAL JOURNALISM: The Artist … (todaysinspiration.blogspot.ca)

Those were the days….actually I think that some of the drawings give a better sense of the gravitas than many of the photographs of the era.   Perhaps this should be considered in the future….everything doesn’t have robe a digital capture!

England Managers old and New ~ Fabio Capello & Roy Hodgson

Scanning through the paper this morning an idea struck me – why not make a joint sketch of Capello and Hodgson together. The Capello sketch works but I am not at all sure about the Hodgson. Hay ho.

Actually made a photograph!

20110515_-_blue_tit_composite

Well wonders alive – I have made a new photograph.   The actual images that were used for this composite were captured in May 2011 and it has taken me this long to get round to making the photograph they were intended for.   This is part of the process of gathering together a series of images for my overdue yearbook of 2011.  This book, once published will be transitional as over the past 12 months I have sold almost all of my photographic equipment.

Lets hope the book is as good as I hope.
