Back Home

After a long day of travelling we got home around about 9pm last night.  Actually the drive back from Ashford was really uneventful apart from some lunatic driving along the M11 at night with no rear lights.  Luckily he didn’t cause too many problems.

To day it is time to start to take stock and the first thing I want to report on is the bizarre treatment of first class passengers on Thalys.

I am not joking...this is the first class waiting area for the Thalys train

I am not joking…this is the first class waiting area for the Thalys train

I suspect that the train is configured for Gard de Nord in Paris so the first class are closest to the station when it arrives.   What it does mean is that the first class is way outside the covered area of the station and you have to wait in a bus shelter.  The weather was fine yesterday but I guess in the middle of the winter it wouldn’t be too much fun.

This really is how isolated First Class is from the rest of the station

How very Dutch.

Packing Packing Packing…

So those three days went by in a flash and we are in full packing mode. Well I say we what I actually mean is I keep well out the way whilst my wife packs. On the face of it this sounds like I’m getting off light but actually we have tried in the past to both pack and things just get lost so I sit back and only do as I’m told – hence I can write this.

As for my reflections of Amsterdam it is far too early to draw any thing together apart from one thing. Amsterdam, dispute being one of the most polite places I’ve been to has an underlying feeling of anarchy . Only time will tell if I feel this way and I suspect my mature reflection will be more nuanced.

European Rugby

I have been following the story of the withdrawal of the English and French rugby teams from the now probably defunct Heineken Cup with great interest. Not because of the rights or otherwise of the arguments on either side but rather the very bias reporting in the Times newspaper.

At first I couldn’t understand why the paper had taken such an anti break up stance until I realised that any new competition is likely to have BT sports as the main TV company and not SKY sports which of course is partially owned by good old Rupert Murdoch..nothing like a conflict of interests here yet not a pep is mentioned in The Times coverage. Strange that.

PS. I do hope some form of solution is found to the impasse – however I doubt it and I expect the Irish, Welsh, Scots and Italian clubs to come calling to the Anglo French table – perhaps not next season but the season after, that is if any of these teams manage to survive that long without the English and French competition – lets face it for the Celtic teams it is probably the English teams they want to play and beat and so generate the most gate receipts etc from fans that also want to see that .

Van Gogh Museum

I know this post is about the Van Gogh Museum (VGM) but I just don’t have any decent images of the VGM that I haven’t already used so you’ll have the make do with more Rijks Museum images.

So the VGM. I guess if you didn’t know what the museum was all about then you are going to be in for one heck of a disappointment. There are very few of the Van Gogh big hitters in the museum – instead what there is a wonderful art history lesson not only about Van Gogh but also the wider context in which he worked and ultimately died. Floor by floor we see the way that Van Gogh approached his work until the crazy climax of his life. However for me it was the little things – the simple sketches and drawings that seemed to have the real power to start to get a feeling for such a strange and driven artist.

Distributed throughout the museum are examples of Van Gogh’s letters. Some where simple letters, others were impassioned commentaries on the small diagram or drawing of something he was about to or had just painted. Clearly if Van Gogh had been alive to day he would have had one of the most read blogs out there. But we live in different times and so to compare the two is somewhat pointless. We just have to be thankful that he wrote so many letters and that they survived to enable a much more rounded understanding of the artist to be developed.

So the VGM is great if you want to better understand the artist. However, if just want to see his greatest paintings then you need to visit other institutions such as the Courtauld gallery or the National Gallery in London.

However, if there is one black mark against the VGM it is that their catering staff are not a patch on the staff at the Rijks Museum. Whereas the Rijks Museum were only too willing to help the VGM staff were almost service station staff helpful – especially when asking about gluten free food. “No gluten free”. Was about the only helpful repost you would get. Now I know that English is a second language in Holland, well sort of but not really, it clearly was to the catering staff at the VGM. So if you have an allergy issue then beware.

As for the rest of the day we spent exploring central Amsterdam and a fascinating place it. This evening even the rain couldn’t stop our exploration and the city appears to take on a whole new character in the damp darkness.
