Facing up to our past

Every now and then the past comes back to haunt – this is what happened to me this afternoon at Leeds Art Gallery.   In general the gallery is a wonderful place to visit full of different types of visual art.  However one of the galleries concentrates on high Victorian art and is full of the usual suspects but the painting above dominates the room.  On the face of it is yet another allegorical Victorian painting depicting some mythical story which was intending to portray some moral lesson to the viewers.   However, the name of the painting, Retribution, should start to make the modern viewer a little uneasy.  The accompanying note explains all.

It is very easy for the modern viewer to be shocked by such work and to be easily offended by the racist elements on display however, I think, this is the wrong way to approach this as it is a form of revisionism on the part of the modern viewer.  Instead, I feel, we should view the painting for what it is, an example of cultural norms of the time and we should endeavour that they no longer form part of the way we lead our lives.   The gallery should also be commended for showing the painting as a means of ensuring we understand our past and try and make it isn’t our future – whether that was the intention or not is unclear – I like to think it was.

Revisiting old friends

Whilst waiting for an old friend to join in a cafe this morning I visited another old friend – KitCam (which according to the internet is several updates out of date – a bit like me I guess).   No matter I really love the app and so I don’t think I’ll bother to update because too often this has ruined what I thought was a great product.  Clearly, just because you can doesn’t mean you should!

The view from the Shire

So I have now recovered from  disturbed sleep patterns and a hangover thanks to the election. It is time to take stock of one of the bluest of blue shires in England.  The first thing to say is that as I drove to my local Waitrose this morning through the rolling countryside of a rock solid Tory constituency it did seem a somewhat different country than the one before the election.   I know this is very very silly but I got the distinct feeling that middle England had spoken and was rather pleased that its voice had prevailed.   As I walked around Waitrose doing a bit of Sunday shopping I really don’t think there was much of a clamer for an end to zero hours contracts or food banks.  Most of the people had got what they wanted and everything seem well with the world.

Totally unscientific I know but probably more accurate than all the  rigorously verified polls that didn’t predict this at all.  It would seem that pollsters have no more idea as to what is happening as economists had before the 2008 crash.  Maybe the political classes may start to talk about policies rather than soundbite, focus group tested, gloop.  I doubt it.

As for the wider picture there are two significant patterns emerging.  Firstly, that whilst there was a small swing to Labour there was a much larger swing to the Conservatives.  The biggest swing of the night was in the marginal seat held by a Conservative cabinet minister – which went from marginal to comfortable by most standards, however not that comfortable when compared with some of her college’s constituencies in other parts of the Shire.   The second pattern is the rise of UKIP which appears to have around 10/12% of the vote.  Whether this will last after the European referendum is another question but I suspect it will as it is more to do with immigration than Europe.

As for the city at the centre of the county this was solidly Labour , but even here there was a significant UKIP surge again driven, I suspect, by immigration rather than Europe.   Perhaps if David Cameron can get some real movement on limiting the scale of EU migration then the UKIP vote will soften?  There is scope for this as Germany appears to be sick of all the migrants they have attracted over the past year so perhaps there is a  opportunity to do a some form of a deal.

So what does the shire tell us about the situation as a whole for the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland?  Well I suspect it is that they aren’t at all interested in listening to the  noises coming from north of the border.  In fact I would go further and suspect that they would be quite happy to see the back of the whole Scotland question and are not willing to give the Scots anything other than what they have already been promised and if the Scots don’t like it well so what?   The shire is deep blue and more interested in England than Britain.  I could well be wrong (I hope I am) but I really feel that very shortly we will be issued with new passports.

Is this in anyway true?  Well it is true as to what I think the election has told us about the Shire.  Is it a wasteland for any other party than a party of the right?  I don’t think that is the case but they would have to choose someone like Tony Blair to make any headway which is interesting as one of the potential leaders of the Labour party just so happens to have a seat in the city and she is seen as a Blairite.  Perhaps looking out on the seas of blue that surrounds her red island might teach her how to talk to the people other than the core of labour supporters which seemed to be all the previous leader  was able to do – and look where that got the Labour party!  Perhaps.

Honky Tonk Boogie

Lee Marvin

Having just the slightest hangover is something I haven’t experienced in such a long time but after such a long day yesterday I needed something to get me to sleep.  Fortunately I had help last night polishing off a couple of bottles of plonk last night so this morning I’m feeling just a little delicate  – still if you can’t take the morning after you really shouldn’t drink in the first place.

We All Got It Wrong….

Well the votes have been cast and counted and the one lesson from the general election in the United Kingdom is that everyone got it wrong.  Whether there is any great virtue in being found out along with anyone else who cast an eye over the runes of forecasting the election is moot.   What is clear from the election is that the United Kingdom or Great britain and Northern Ireland is today a much more right wing country that much of the popular culture would like you to believe.

Is that a good thing?  I haven’t got the first clue as to how to answer that but it is a reality that all within these isles must come  to terms with – this is especially true for those on the left of politics, whether actively involved or shouting from the side.   At the moment you cannot win a general election by appealing just to the left leaning populus you must also be able to communicate to the centre right as well.   Trying to pretend that Scotland has a lesson for the whole of Britain would also be a mistake as this election has demonstrated that at the moment Scotland doesn’t seem to want be a fully paid up member.  The West Lothian question will, I suspect, be one of the main themes of the next 5 years.

So congratulations to David Cameron and the Conservative party.  When the voters were asked who they wanted as the next Prime Minister it is very clear the David Cameron was the only man for the job.  We can now sit back and watch it all unravel over the next months and years and by 2020 we will really know whether we, as electors, made the right choice.

When is a majority not a majority? When it is not a Tory majority.

Things are starting to get really rattled in the Tory supporting press this morning. They appear to be waking up to the fact that for the fifth general election in a row the Conservatives will not win an outright majority and so are now arguing that the Tory party should refuse to give up power even though they can’t get a majority in the House of Commons.

At this point it is worth pointing out that I am not a constitutional expert but having listened to what many have had to say over the past few weeks it is clear that an unwritten constitution is all things to all men and women so perhaps we are all experts. However, the latest argument that a majority in the House of Commons against the Conservatives is the wrong type of majority, because the Labour party may well have less Labour MP’s than Conservative or that there share of the vote was smaller, does seem very close to revolution and one that will only come back and destroy the Conservative brand once and for all. Yet today The Times has argued such a thing in its leader and claiming that a Conservative minority Government would be legitimate because of ‘…Size, incumbency and loyalty to Britain…’ and so continue to rule. It doesn’t matter that it would never get any legislation through the House of Commons and would ensure that Scotland would turn to the SNP in such a big way that trying to stop the break up of Britain would be almost impossible and create the biggest constitutional crises since the abdication of Edward 8th (Theresa May’s words). Perhaps the word ‘Unionist’ in the Conservative and Unionist party has a new definition as well. Given the scaremongering about the SNP over the past few weeks I guess it must.

So it seems as we come to the climax of one of the strangest campaigns in modern history some amongst us are willing to rewrite the constitution again just because they can’t stand loosing. It does remind me of the quote from some left of centre person recently who claimed that the Tony Blair majorities were somewhat illegitimate because they were gained by the wrong type of voters voting for Labour. I fully support the Conservative party’s attempt to form a Government, just as a I support the Labour party’s efforts but surely if any arrangement of loyalties cannot win a vote in the House of Commons they can’t carry on being the Government and it doesn’t really matter about spurious qualifications of the right type of majority…whoever has got the votes forms the Government of the day. The others have to suck it up and try and win an election next time around.
