One of the disadvantages of age is that you start to collect memories of how things have changed – and it is debatable whether they are for the better or worse. Take these two images. The first is Rawdon pit circa 1982 and the second is the Redcar steel works Nov 2013. You are no longer able to capture these images due to the painful logic of a capitalist economy – it is just cheaper to get the coal and the steel abroad. So now Rawdon is the visitors centre for the National Forest and Redcar? Well it might still have a steel making future but it is doubtful and so one day may be the site of? Only time will tell and perhaps one day I might be there to capture it some 30 years in the future? There is something to look forward to.
