Ever Decreasing Circles…

What? This can’t be true! A nice summer’s day in this miserable June. Well yes it can be true and it was the perfect day to slowly criss cross rural east Leicestershire. The election seemed in another world and there was hardly any sign that an election campaign was under way. Yes there was the occasional sign endorsing a particular candidate but apart from that nothing. This really is a virtual campaign.

I could comment on what passes for a campaign on the Conservative side but what is the point? Just as you think they can’t make things worse they find new ways to disabuse your naivety. The latest disaster is the ever unfolding scandal of the aids to the Prime Minister betting on the date of the election – alleged behaviour that, if true, would be a blatant piece of insider dealing. Perhaps they might have got away with it but a policeman has been arrested and charged with similar behaviour so there is no chance of that. One rule for PC Plod another for the court flunkies around Sunack? Well that is what it looks like and just reignites all the anger about ‘Partygate

“They behaved like the most selfish of individuals, venal and stupid, all at the same time”

Tim Montgomery – Times Radio

So just a little amount of comment then! Still it was lovely day including the opportunity to capture my own version of ‘that’ Windows XP image – you know the one..

Blue Moon…

I see the bad moon a-risin’

Creedence Clearwater Revival

Today, the latest supa dupa poll in the Sunday Times suggests that the Conservatives will be down to 72 seats – and most of those seats will have a majority of less than 1%. How accurate is this? We’ll only know on the 5th of July but with less than three weeks to turn a rout into…well what? A 1997 defeat? This was considered a rout back in the day but not today.

The one interesting thing is that all of the stars of this horror story appear to be keeping their seats – so we can expect the likes of Braverman, Truss et al fighting for their lives over the rotting corpse of the once great Parliamentary Conservative Party

Bad Moon Indeed.

Cascade Failure…

Many years ago when I used to write computer programs I used to create errors that caused Cascade Failure of the whole system. Not very good programming and usually the only way clear the error was to use the great IT hack – switch off and on again. Today we may have reached such a failure for the Conservative Party at this election – the Reform Party have now overtaken the Conservatives in an opinion poll. Now all the usual caveats apply: the result of the poll is within the margin of error, this is just one poll, the only poll that counts is the one on the 4th of July etc. Of course Nigel Farage won’t mention any of these and he will claim that this is the day that reform replaced the Conservative Party as the official opposition. This is nonsense but to be expected.

But what if they are not nonsense, not the Reform Party being the official opposition, but all of the caveats? What if this is the day that the Conservative Party has their own cascade failure and nothing they do corrects the error from the last process but rather makes things worse? They are floating around the inflection point where all of a sudden the first past post system, rather than being a help to them starts to really hammer them as other parties start to get more votes than them in constancy after constituency and so they sink to second, third or worse. Then what?

At the time of writing what is clear is that it won’t mean a sudden rush towards Reform who are probably at somewhere near their high point. The votes have to go somewhere and I suspect that in most Conservative held seats they will go initially to the Liberal Democrats. But here comes another failure – they might switch directly to Labour if this is the best way to cause the Conservatives to lose that constituency. So the Conservative’s will suffer something they rarely have done – a split of the vote on the right whilst at the same time a consolidation of the left of centre vote to one party, be that Labour, Liberal Democrats or even the Greens.

One final thought. We will hear Conservative spokespeople claiming that the election is still 3 weeks away and lot can change. This is true but only up to a point. In the next week the postal votes will be sent out and this may represent up to 20% of the electorate. If most of those who requested postal vote actually cast their vote, a reasonable assumption as they have gone to trouble of asking for a postal vote, then what is happening now is very important indeed.

We’ll not know the answer to any of this for another 3 weeks. However, if the next 3 weeks are as bad for the Conservatives as the first 3 weeks then we could be looking at the Cascade Failure of Cascade Failures.

Super Defeat or Super Majority…

May 28th, 2010 was a very important day in my life. I didn’t know that at the time but it was. This was the day that the iPad went on sale in the UK and I bought one just after its launch – although I’m not too sure when that was. What I do know is that by the November of the year I was making silly little drawings like the one above. The reason why I mention this is because I have had an iPad, of one version or another, for the whole time that the Conservative Party has been in government. I’m really not sure what to make of that.

One of the sillier things uttered up by Grant Shapps in recent time is that we must vote Tory to stop the Labour Party getting a super majority. This is a silly because in British politics there is no such thing as a super majority – there is only a majority. Any government likes to have a large majority but to get legislation through the House of Commons they need a majority of 1. Anything else is just bragging.

I guess what Shapps was actually saying was please don’t give the Tories a Super Defeat. Or more accurately please don’t vote Labour in Welwyn and Hatfield ‘cos I still want to be an MP. If the polls are to be believed, and by making such an appeal it would seem that Rishi Sunak et al believes them, Shapps will be defeated and have to fall back on other employment – insert your own joke here.

One final thing. The other two drawings on this post were created yesterday on my latest iPad, although not THE latest iPad. Have my skills improved? You decide.

Dawn…

There is something a little bit special about dawn in the summer. At this time of year it is around 04:00hrs and when the sun comes out there is a stillness. Of course this being 2024 dawn was accompanied by temperatures more suitable to early spring rather than ‘flaming June‘.

The reason for this early call was twofold: firstly it is refreshing to have a this hour or so to yourself but secondly I’m are the Harborough trail again. The district really is a strange dichotomy of farming to east and modernity in the west. Hopefully over the next few weeks I’ll be able to explore this further.

The Unfulfilled Promise

So next week is manifesto week and it will be the moment that the economic with the truths will be revealed in all their misleading mendacity. This is not a political point it is just a statement of fact. No political party will tell the truth to we voters because, as Col. Jessup might have put it…We Can’t handle the truth… . Instead we get half truths and flat out lies and then we complain when we are lied to because we don’t want to accept we can’t have something for nothing. So politicians lie a bit more and this leads us to the situation where the Conservatives have made any number unfunded promises and then accused Labour of a £2k tax bomb. All the time the Conservatives know that they can’t afford the things that they claimed during the election they’re going to introduce without raising taxes themselves.

If you don’t believe that you are being lied to next week then, if you are so inclined, try and find how each of the major parties are going to pay for the increase in long term social care for the elderly, a huge and ever increasing commitment. It will be be a fruitless effort because there won’t be anything. The reason for this is Theresa May tried to be honest about this in the 2017 election and got crucified for it.

Perhaps one day this might change but I doubt it.

Black Coffee…

There are days when you image life cannot get any sillier…then it does. This morning a hapless Conservative minister, Mark Harper, tried to polish the turd that is Rishi Sunak’s D Day appearance and disappearance as not a ‘serious blow‘. Now I know these people have to pull the party line but really. Do they not know we have eyes and ears?

As a side note there is a real chance that Harper may not be an MP after the General Election. I suspect trying to defend the undefendable may not go down too well with the electors of the Forest of Dean. Only time will tell.

Woman’s Work…

Who’d be Penny Mordant this evening? The Prime Minister we never had? (not sure about that – ed). Tonight she faces Nigel Farage and Angela Rayner in the latest election debate after receiving the hospital pass of hospital passes by Rishi Sunak this morning who has had to apologise for skipping out of the D Day celebrations so that he can do an interview for ITN. Just the sort of thing that will make Rishi even less popular to the assumed Reform leaning Conservative voter. I wonder what the reform leader might have to say about that? I guess we’ll find out this evening.

Is Rishi Sunak trying to throw this election? I’m sure he isn’t but with every passing day that certainty is wavering. One thing is for sure – he will be glad that Penny Mordant hasn’t got that sword she held at King Charles’ coronation.

Never Reaching the End…

Another Day Another Anticlimax. The election grumbles on with the Tory share of the vote slowly descending towards, under our voting system, that could be a major extinction event for them.

Will it happen? Who knows but as every day passes it becomes a real possibility.

The Press Have Their Story…

Hurrah! The press can wet themselves with excitement. The Podcasts can have a good pod. The court jester of British Politics has taken a few weeks off from trying to make a lot of money in America to occasionally visit the good people of Clacton.

Cry Havoc and….well probably nothing. He has tried a number of times to get into parliament and failed. I’m not really sure he wants to get in this time as being a backbench MP is no fun and requires hundreds of hours work looking after the cases that their constituents bring to them. Something I fear will not be of great interest to Nigel.
