A strange collision of Taylor Swift and Eric Gill – something I wouldn’t wish on the most powerful woman in the music industry – according to all the news outlets. Far be it from me to inject a cynical note in this so called champion of the little guy tale but it all seems just a little too stage managed. For those of you who are not aware Apple withdrew a proposal not to pay any royalties to musicians during the the ‘Free’ three month launch of Apple Music because of a protest from Ms swift. Now the whole idea of not paying was really shitty on the part of Apple but something we have become accustomed to from the most self absorbed corporate behemoth on the planet. Backing down on such shitty move is not a usual Apple trait, that is of course unless they wanted to generate a huge amount of free publicity for Apple Music. We Hear You indeed – Ms Swift no doubt made a huge killing as people who would otherwise not be aware of her music checked it out and possibly bought some tracks, (or was that just me?) of course via iTunes.
So what can we learn from this tale of corporate greed? Firstly, money talks and secondly I am far too cynical for my own good because surely such things never take place?
