We All Got It Wrong….

Well the votes have been cast and counted and the one lesson from the general election in the United Kingdom is that everyone got it wrong.  Whether there is any great virtue in being found out along with anyone else who cast an eye over the runes of forecasting the election is moot.   What is clear from the election is that the United Kingdom or Great britain and Northern Ireland is today a much more right wing country that much of the popular culture would like you to believe.

Is that a good thing?  I haven’t got the first clue as to how to answer that but it is a reality that all within these isles must come  to terms with – this is especially true for those on the left of politics, whether actively involved or shouting from the side.   At the moment you cannot win a general election by appealing just to the left leaning populus you must also be able to communicate to the centre right as well.   Trying to pretend that Scotland has a lesson for the whole of Britain would also be a mistake as this election has demonstrated that at the moment Scotland doesn’t seem to want be a fully paid up member.  The West Lothian question will, I suspect, be one of the main themes of the next 5 years.

So congratulations to David Cameron and the Conservative party.  When the voters were asked who they wanted as the next Prime Minister it is very clear the David Cameron was the only man for the job.  We can now sit back and watch it all unravel over the next months and years and by 2020 we will really know whether we, as electors, made the right choice.
