Well it is coming to a head – should I ditch my final ‘normal’ camera and completely commit to the iPhone as my only camera? Over the past 12 months or so I have been moving in this direction – piece by piece I’ve sold off my other camera gear and replacing it with a Sony NEX5. This in itself was a bit of a sea change but nonetheless I still had a ‘normal’ camera. However, since taking this step I find I’m using the Sony less and less. So much so that for every 20 or so images I make my iPhone I make one with the Sony. Actually those numbers might be slightly adrift but not by much.
A case in point was this morning. I went a walk around the local botanic gardens with both cameras. I think I captured one, maybe two images with the Sony yet I captured over 10 with the iPhone. The Sony is awkward to carry around whilst the iPhone is always there. The Sony is a far more capable camera but the iPhone seems more in tune with the way I lead my life, and more importantly, the way I want to make photographs.
What to do? I’m not entirely sure. Clearly the Sony is not the way forward but I could consider the Canon G15 as a replacement. I have had two earlier versions of the G series and they are probably my favourite cameras. Simple to use and easy to stuff in your pocket. However, where the iPhone is a very limited camera the G series aren’t. But the iPhone has access to some truly astonishing photo apps which the G series doesn’t – having to be worked on post camera.
I really need to think about these issues and come up with an answer.
