Well my new camera arrived this morning. Over the past few months I have become more and more disillusioned with the whole DSLR approach to photography. This was driven by my exploration of iphoneography, which interestingly has abated now that I have an iPhone 4 which has a much improved camera. Anyway, I decided to make a radical shake to my photography and sell a whole lot of my camera gear and replace them with a much simpler camera. After looking around I decided that the Sony NEX5N offered the best combination of flexibility and image quality. I had thought about its bigger brother the NEX7N but I am not convinced cramming 24 mpixel on such a small chip is the best way forward – 16 mpxel is more than enough.
So what are my first impressions? Well I guess if you just want to use the camera straight out of the box then the set up might have been simple enough – however I wanted to use it in a more ‘professional’ manner. The result of this was that I had to reset the camera before I could make it work! Once I had got it to work I had to start to re think my way of working – especially with the touch screen but now I have started to set up the custom button so the camera is becoming my camera and things are getting better. So first impressions are pretty good. Time will tell whether this continues.
