iPad – first impressions

First impressions, first impressions – what to say?   Well in short very impressed.   The weight problem I had identified before has been overcome by buying a very nice case for the machine.  This allows me to prop up the machine at an angle of my choice.  This makes reading the content so much better.  Just as an aside if you go into Apple stores they have the iPads on display on plastic stands that are perfect to use the iPad – however, they are not for sale even though there appears to be quite a demand for them.

The next thing I have noticed is that most iPhone apps don’t work very well with the iPad.  This isn’t quite as bad as it sounds.   The apps work fine it is just that they are designed for ther iPhone and so sit in the middle of screen looking, frankly, ridiculous.  Some, such as the New York Times app allows you to increase the size but all this does make the whole thing look fuzzy.  No doubt in time most of the apps I have downloaded will have an iPad version.

Some of the iPad apps are to die for.   As usual the Guardian has played a blinder with the  eyewitness app which is eye poppingly good.   Oh if only the Times iPad app was the same.   It is slow and really quite ponderous.  You get 28 days worth of the paper with the app – although I have just opened the app up again at it seems to only want to show me the edition from the 3rd June and now it seems to locked up completely – that was money well spent!

I still have a lot of things to play with but it seems to be working out just fine.
